Former Beaumont Mayor Ann Connors and her husband George are not very happy with the city's decision to possibly become a sister city with a city in China and made their opposition clear at a recent city meeting.
Ann Connors served on the Beaumont City Council from 1986 to 1991 and was mayor during that time.
“This country, communist China, can't be trusted as they have shown by example with lead in toys, contaminated milk products and a history of human rights violations, with their own country, with Tibet and border countries,” George Connors told the city council during its meeting on Dec. 6.
In October, Beaumont Mayor Brian DeForge and Mickey Valdivia, general manager of the Beaumont Cherry Valley Recreation and Parks District, traveled to the city of Shengzhou in China to explore the possibility of becoming sister cities. DeForge signed a memorandum of understanding to continue discussions with Shengzhou officials.
Last month, Valdivia and DeForge reported back to the city council about their trip and presented reasons why they believe a sister city relationship would be beneficial to Beaumont. Among the reasons for forging a possible relationship with Shengzhou include opening the door to a foreign exchange program, bringing Beaumont international recognition and spurring international investment in Beaumont.
George Connors, a Korean War veteran, said he will contact civic groups in Beaumont including the Veterans of Foreign War and the Republican and Democratic parties to oppose a sister city relationship between Beaumont and Shengzhou.
“Between their health standards and their (China) human rights violations, it is obvious they care nothing about people or democracy,” Ann Connors told the city council. “This plan is not Beaumont. It is not the promised “small town feel” as the city grows. It is small town boys letting their perceived importance go to their heads. When pride came in the door principle went out the window.”
