BEIJING (Reuters) - President Barack Obama's inauguration speech has a little twist in translations available on some Chinese websites where his references to communism and dissent have been cut.
北京(路透社)——巴拉克·奥巴马就职演说的翻译,被中国部分网站歪曲了一小部分,他关于共产主义和不同政见的内容被删去了。

"Recall that earlier generations faced down communism and fascism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions," Obama said in his 18-minute inauguration address on Tuesday. "To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history, but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist."
“回想先辈们在抵抗共产主义和法西斯主义之时,他们不仅依靠手中的导弹或坦克,他们还依靠稳固的联盟和坚定的信仰,”奥巴马在周二他18分钟的就职演说中说道。“那些靠着贪污和欺骗以及压制不同政见而保住权势的人,须知你们站在历史错误的一边,不过只要你们愿意松开拳头,我们就会伸出援手。”

In the translations available on top Chinese portals Sina, Sohu, the word "communism" is omitted and the paragraph on dissent was gone. Another widely viewed portal, Netease, cut the paragraph in its entirety, prompting one Canada-based Chinese to post it in English in the comments section, with the remark "Hahaha, communism and fascism." The paragraph mentioning dissent was included in the Netease version, and was widely praised by Chinese posting comments.
在中国重要门户网站新浪、搜狐的翻译内容中,“共产主义”这个词被省略了,关于不同政见那一段也没有了。另一个点击率高的门户网站网易,把整个那一段都删掉了,一个加拿大的华人在留言栏上其评论里提及了该内容,用英文写道“哈哈哈,共产主义和法西斯主义。”关于不同政见那一段保留在网易的版本里,受到了发表评论的中国人广泛好评。

The full speech appeared on the website of Phoenix TV, a Hong Kong-based station that is branding its website as a source for news, and in English on the China Daily state newspaper website. Communist China has shut more than 200 websites in recent days for "vulgar" content, a move seen by many as another step in its battle to stifle dissent in a year of sensitive anniversaries, including the 20th anniversary of the bloody crackdown on the pro-democracy Tiananmen Square protests in 1989.
完整版的演说内容可以在香港凤凰卫视的网站上看到,该网站宣称其是新闻的来源,英文版的内容可以在《中国日报》的网站上看到。共产主义中国近几天来已经关闭了超过200家网站因内容“低俗”,这一举动被许多人看成是中国在今年压制不同意见战斗的另一步,今年是一个有多个周年的敏感一年,包括1989年在天安门广场宣传民主的抗议被血腥镇压20周年。

Chinese translation cuts out parts of Obama speech
中国的翻译版删减部分奥巴马演说的内容

BEIJING – The official Chinese translation of President Barack Obama's inauguration speech was missing his references to communism and dissent, while a live broadcast on state television Wednesday quickly cut away to the anchor when the topic was mentioned. The comments by the newly installed U.S. president veered into politically sensitive territory for China's ruling Communist Party, which maintains a tight grip over the Internet and the entirely state-run media. Beijing tolerates little dissent and frequently decries foreign interference in its internal affairs.
北京——巴拉克·奥巴马总统就职演说的中国官方翻译版中,缺失了他关于共产主义和不同政见的内容,在国家电视台周三现场直播中,当该话题被提及时画面被迅速切换到主持人这边。新就任美国总统的讲话内容却转变成了在中国掌权的共产党政治敏感领域,该国对互联网保持着严格管制,媒体完全是属于官方的。北京容忍一点点不同意见,经常谴责外国对其内政的干涉。

At one point, Obama said earlier generations "faced down communism and fascism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions." He later addressed "those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent — know that you are on the wrong side of history." The Chinese translation of the speech, credited to the Web site of the official China Daily newspaper, was missing the word "communism" in the first sentence. The paragraph with the sentence on dissent had been removed entirely.
在这一次,奥巴马说先辈们“在抵抗共产主义和法西斯主义之时,他们不仅依靠手中的导弹或坦克,他们还依靠稳固的联盟和坚定的信仰”。他随后还说到“那些靠着贪污和欺骗以及压制不同政见而保住权势的人,须知你们站在历史错误的一边。”在官方的《中国日报》网站上中文翻译版中。第一句里的“共产主义”没有了。关于不同政见的那一段整个就删掉了。

The censored version was carried by the state-run Xinhua News Agency and posted on popular online portals Sina and Sohu. Another portal, Netease, used a version without the paragraph mentioning communism, but retaining the part about dissent. The news channel of state broadcaster China Central Television broadcast the speech live early Wednesday local time, but appeared caught off-guard by the statement about facing down communism. The translator had no sooner said "fascism and communism" when the audio faded out from Obama's speech and cameras cut back to the studio anchor, who seemed flustered for a second before turning to ask an expert what challenges the president faces in turning around the U.S. economy.

Wang Jianhong, deputy director of the CCTV general editing department, said he did not stay up to watch the inauguration broadcast but suggested the transition was a normal part of the program. "There are breakaways even when broadcasting China's own meetings," he said. "Americans might care a lot about the presidential inauguration, but Chinese may not be very interested." No one in the editing department of the China Daily Web site was immediately available to answer questions. The full translation of Obama's speech could be viewed on the Web site of Hong Kong-based broadcaster Phoenix Satellite Television, which has a reputation as a more independent news source. The China Daily Web site posted Obama's full remarks in English only.

China has previously altered the words of U.S. officials. A 2004 speech in Shanghai by former Vice President Dick Cheney was broadcast live on state-run television at the insistence of U.S. officials, but the Chinese transcript of the remarks deleted references to political freedom. In 2003, the memoirs of then-Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton were pulled from publication in China after the government-backed publisher removed references to the 1989 Tiananmen Square democracy protests and altered Clinton's comments about human rights activist Harry Wu.
中国曾经改动过美国官员的话。美国前副总统迪克·切尼2004年在上海的一次演讲,曾经在美国官方的坚持下通过中国官方的电视台直播过,但是演说内容的中文翻译稿删除了有关政治自由的部分。2003年,希拉里·罗德姆·克林顿参议员的传记在中国出版受阻,直至有政府背景的出版社在删除关于1989年天安门民主抗议的内容,并改动克林顿对人权活动人士吴弘达的评价后才得以发行。

Chinese sites cut communism, dissent from Obama speech
中国网站删除奥巴马演说中的共产主义和不同政见内容

SHANGHAI (AFP) – US President Barack Obama's inauguration speech left China's media scrambling on Wednesday, with many attempting to censor his references to communism and dissent. However the attempts appeared to backfire after their omission in Chinese translations drew even more attention to the words on Internet forums.
上海(法新社)——本周三美国总统巴拉克·奥巴马的就职演说遭到了中国媒体的频率干扰,采用各种方法试图监控他关于共产主义和不同政见的内容。不过那些企图显然事与愿违,在他们删除那些中文翻译后,在互联网论坛上更招来对那些话的关注。

"Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions," Obama said in his speech. State broadcaster China Central Television broadcast the speech live, but when the translator said communism, the channel cut to an awkwardly smiling news anchor, Beijing-based lawyer Xu Zhiyong wrote on his blog.
“回想先辈们在抵抗共产主义和法西斯主义之时,他们不仅依靠手中的导弹或坦克,他们还依靠稳固的联盟和坚定的信仰,”奥巴马在他的演讲中说道。北京律师许志永在他的博客中写道,官方的中央电视台在对演讲的现场直播中,当翻译刚说出共产主义这个词,画面被切换到一脸尴尬笑容的新闻主播这边。

"To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history, but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist," Obama continued. China's two biggest Internet portals Sina and Sohu omitted the word communism from the translations of the speech on their websites and cut the line about dissent entirely. However, English versions of the speech appeared in some Chinese media intact. The state-run, English language China Daily, which is aimed mainly at a foreign audience, concluded its front page story with the dissent quote. It also ran the full English text of the speech on its website.

The interruptions to the live broadcast and carefully edited translations indicate China's propaganda officials were monitoring the speech, said Xiao Qiang, director of the China Internet Project at the University of California. The omissions were not necessarily due to concerns about ideological differences, but rather how ordinary Chinese might respond to Obama's words, Xiao told AFP. "Propaganda filtering is one thing, but there are certain concepts, phrases or lines that ring true among the Chinese people and that is what the Chinese propaganda people really want to filter out," he said. "It's not about perspective, it's about what resonates among the Chinese people and will make people say 'That's true.'"
