Relax, ignore the awkward data points and griping bloggers. China is back in control. The Shanghai Composite Index is up 30 per cent year to date and Zhou Xiaochuan, governor of the People’s Bank of China, has, in effect, called the bottom of the country’s economic downturn. Many will hope Mr Zhou is right and many will be disappointed. Yes, the country is in as strong a position as any to spend its way out of crisis – and there is already evidence that government spending is having an impact. But other indicators are less upbeat. Industrial earnings are in a swoon; net income plunged by more than a third year on year in January and February. Steel prices keep falling, and the removal of export taxes does nothing to stimulate global demand. China may be able to seize the moral high ground at the G20 but it is in no position to save the world.
