NEW YORK, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- The publishers of the New Oxford American Dictionary said in New York that the 2009 Word of the Year, "unfriend," was inspired by Facebook.
纽约,11月17日(美国国际合众社)-----% F( }: P) w* ]
《新牛津美语辞典》出版商在纽约说,2009年的年度词汇是在FACEBOOK社交网站产生的-----unfriend(删除好友)一词。

The Oxford University Press said unfriend, a verb, is defined as: "To remove someone as a 'friend' on a social networking site such as Facebook."

牛津大学出版社解释说:“! D! c3 unfriend,一个动词,意为o2 在Facebook等社交网站上将‘好友’删除。”

Christine Lindberg, senior lexicographer for Oxford's U.S. dictionary program, said the word was chosen because of its potential to become a lasting part of the U.S. lexicon.

牛津词典资深编辑林德伯格说,这个词之所以入选是因为它有成为美国词典中永恒的一词的潜力。D% ^; Z0 {% x

"It has both currency and potential longevity," Lindberg said. "In the online social networking context, its meaning is understood, so its adoption as a modern verb form makes this an interesting choice for Word of the Year. Most 'un-' prefixed words are adjectives (unacceptable, unpleasant), and there are certainly some familiar 'un-' verbs (uncap, unpack), but 'unfriend' is different from the norm. It assumes a verb sense of 'friend' that is really not used (at least not since maybe the 17th century!). Unfriend has real lex-appeal."

'Unfriend' is New Oxford dictionary's Word of the Year

"Birther " was in the running, so was "death panels," but in the end the New Oxford American Dictionary can only pick one word of the year. For 2009, it's "unfriend," says the Oxford University Press.
Or in New Oxfordspeak: "unfriend – verb – To remove someone as a 'friend' on a social networking site such as Facebook. As in, 'I decided to unfriend my roommate on Facebook after we had a fight.'"

"It has both currency and potential longevity," notes Christine Lindberg, Senior Lexicographer for Oxford's U.S. dictionary program. "In the online social networking context, its meaning is understood, so its adoption as a modern verb form makes this an interesting choice for Word of the Year."

Getting down into the lexicographic weeds, Lindeberg says "unfriend" is different from the norm in the use of "un."

"it assumes a verb sense of 'friend' that is really not used (at least not since maybe the 17th century!)," says Lindberg. "'Unfriend' has real lex-appeal."
