The US army has admitted its soldiers shot dead an Afghan journalist near the main Australian military base in Afghanistan.
The International Security Assistance Force says Afghan journalist Ahmad Omaid Khpalwak was killed by US soldiers, in a case of mistaken identity.
The 25-year-old was shot dead during a battle with insurgents at Tarin Kot in Uruzgan province on July 28.
The ISAF report says US troops mistook the reporter for an insurgent.
Mr Khpalwak worked for various media outlets, including the BBC and also freelanced for the ABC.
The US Army has expressed its condolences to his family.
