Warning that Washington should be “careful in its words and actions,” China on Monday sent a strong message to the United States in response to the new national defense strategy President Barack Obama announced last week emphasizing a renewed focus on the Asian region.

Chinese Ministry of Defense spokesman Geng Yansheng said in his country’s first reaction to the sweeping Pentagon plan, made public on Thursday, that the “accusations leveled at China by the U.S. side” are “totally baseless,” Reuters reports.

White House press secretary Jay Carney said the new strategy reflected Obama’s belief that “we had, as a nation, not been paying enough attention to Asia.”
