In many ways, Vladimir Putin is an enigma. The former KGB agent spent most of his life working for the secretive institution and rose to power from obscurity. This anonymity has allowed him to tightly control his image, and he’s made powerful use of that in creating his own mythology.

Putin’s parents, Maria and Vladimir Putin, survived the siege of Leningrad. The elder Vladimir joined the army, fought against the Germans in World War II, and was severely wounded, but managed to make a decent living as a skilled laborer in a train-car factory. His mother worked a variety of unskilled jobs, including as a night watchman and a cleaning lady, so she could spend time with her son.

During Putin’s childhood, his family lived on the top floor of a five-story building with two other families. They shared a gas stove and a sink in the hallway, but the Putins were the lucky ones among the bunch: they had the largest room in the shared apartment. Their abode measured roughly 12 by 15 feet, which in those days could be considered extravagant.

Putin attended school in St. Petersburg, though he wasn’t a particularly good student. He was more interested in getting the best of classmates through fistfights on the playground. It’s a part of his life he’s very proud of, given that the largest amount of authorized biographical information available is about his youthful brawls. (This is his class picture from 1961. Putin is in the front row, third from the left.)

Ever the charmer, Putin dances with a girl during his ninth-grade year. But he had heavier things on his mind as a boy. “When I was in ninth grade, I was influenced by films and books, and I developed a desire to work for the KGB,” Putin told a biographer. “There is nothing special about that.”

Around the age of 10, Putin began exploring ways to become a more skilled fighter. He tried boxing, but found it too painful—especially after his nose was broken. Then he discovered martial arts, specifically a Soviet fighting style called Sambo. Sambo loosely translates to “self-defense without weapons” and is a hodgepodge of judo, karate and wrestling.

Putin dated his wife, Ludmila, for more than three years—an eternity by Russian standards—before they married in 1983. (For her part, Ludmila wasn’t entirely impressed at first. She thought he was disheveled and unromantic.) His proposal took her completely by surprise: She thought he was breaking up with her, but three months later, they were married. Two years after that, they had their first daughter, Maria. Their relationship has been heavily scrutinized, as many have predicted the demise of the union because of Vladimir’s alleged philandering.

In 1984, Putin attended spy school in Moscow. A year later, he wound up in Dresden, Germany, but there was disappointment. He was not undercover and at times felt the job was fruitless. Ordered to collect intelligence on West Germany and the U.S. military, Putin was reduced to clipping newspaper articles.

After an unfulfilling career with the KGB, Putin turned to politics. He retired from the spy agency in 1991, after the fall of the Soviet Union, and returned to Leningrad. He eventually became deputy mayor.

In 1994, Russian President Boris Yeltsin appointed Putin to head the Federal Security Service, the successor to the Soviet-era KGB.

Putin eventually rose to be Yeltsin's deputy chief of staff. On Dec. 31, 1999, Yeltsin stepped aside and hand power over to Putin amid an economic downturn that saw the ruble lose 70 percent of its value and 29 percent of Russians living below the poverty line.

Despite the hectic pace that comes with running a country, Putin still finds time to practice the sport that he loves.

Putin served two terms as president, but term limits prohibited him from serving a third. Putin stepped down, but was offered the role of prime minister, which he gladly accepted, by his successor, Dmitry Medvedev, the deputy prime minister at the time. Putin endorsed Medvedev and remained hugely influential.

Putin is again running for president, though he may have some trouble winning election if recent protests are any indication, more than 120,000 people rallied against Putin in early February, an astonishing number given the frigid temperatures. Their main demand? That Russia take better care of its people.

Their relationship has been heavily scrutinized, as many have predicted the demise of the union because of Vladimir’s alleged philandering.
