【正文】Taiwan has not given up on the possibility of holding an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) Economic Leaders Meeting in the future, a Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) official said yesterday.台湾外交部官员昨日称，台湾将继续争取APEC领导人非正式会议的举办权。
Tom Chou, director-general of MOFA's Department of International Organisations, said yesterday that as a member of Apec, Taiwan, known as Chinese Taipei by the international organisation, has been holding Apec events and meetings for some time.台湾外交部国组司长周台竹昨日称，台湾作为亚太经合组织成员，已经举办过APEC相关活动和会议。
Taiwan is specialised in the fields of small- to medium-sized enterprises, natural disaster prevention as well as issues of women's rights, he noted. Each year, Taiwan hosts an average of 18 Apec-related events, he added.他指出“台湾在中小企业、防灾、妇女权益等领域表现不俗。台湾平均每年举办18项APEC的相关活动。”
Asked to comment if it is possible for Taiwan to host a major Apec meeting such as the Apec Leaders Meeting in the near future, Chou noted that the current “international political reality” could make it difficult to realise.关于台湾是否有可能近期举办APEC领导人非正式会议时，他回答道：“在目前国际政治局势下这个可能很难实现。”
However, this does not mean Taiwan has given up on hosting such Apec events, Chou said.“但这并不意味着台湾会放弃这样的机会”
“We will continue to work together with related authorities to make such an event possible,” he said.“我们将携手相关专家，共同实现这个可能。”
Apec is a forum for 21 Pacific Rim member economies that seeks to promote free trade and economic cooperation throughout the Asia-Pacific region.APEC是亚太地区最具影响力的经济合作官方论坛，目前共有21个正式会员。
Beijing hosted this year's Apec leaders' week from Nov 5 to 11, with the 22nd Apec Economic Leaders' Meeting on Nov 10 and 11.第22次APEC会议于今年11月5日到11日在北京举行，其中领导人非正式会议在10日和11日举行。
