But in Shanghai, China's capital of chic, pensioners in their nighties have always been part of the scene.
It's the locals' way of showing they live in the area and can't beclassed as migrant workers. An affirmation of prosperity showing theyno longer sleep in their old clothes.
但是在上海，中国的时尚之都，身着睡衣的退休者们却永远是这城市抹不掉的风景。这是本地的习俗，用来展示他们居住在这个区域，并且不能被划分到外来劳工那个层次去。对繁荣的肯定也体现在他们再也不穿着原来的衣服睡觉了

In China's supposedly classless society it is a little bit of urban snobbery. But for how much longer?
The "Jim Jam" police are now out in force trying to break up the elderly's love affair with their pyjamas.
在中国大致的社会等级中，这有点俗不可耐的城市气，可是还会持续多久呢？“睡衣“警察们已经组织起来要把这些中老年人和他们睡衣分开啦。

In the northeast of Shanghai, the Rixin neighbourhood committee hasbegun a "Ban the PJs" campaign to discourage the daytime display ofnightwear.
在上海东北部，日新（音）社区居委会已经发起了“远离睡衣”的活动，来抵制白天穿睡衣招摇过市。

"We're telling people not to wear pyjamas in the street because it looks very uncivilised," said community leader Guo Xilin.
He said it was a public embarrassment to the city of Shanghai.
"They should keep the pyjamas in the bedroom. This is just visual pollution."
“我们告诉人们不要穿着睡衣在大街上逛，因为这实在是太不文明了，”社区领导郭西林（音）说。他说这有碍上海的市容。“他们应该在卧室里穿睡衣，在外面穿实在是视觉污染。”

But opponents of the pyjama purge spoke out in support of their sartorial preferences.
"Pyjamas are also a type of clothes. They're comfortable and it's no big deal since everyone wears them," said Mr Ge.
Twenty years ago they tried to ban pyjamas on Shanghai's streets. The campaign was ignored and later abandoned.
And local OAPs say they won't be ditching their PJs anytime soon.
但是那些对‘禁止睡衣‘持反对意见的人则大胆的说出了他们对衣着喜好的支持。“睡衣也是衣服的一种，它们穿起来很舒服，而且因为大家都穿，所以没觉得有什么问题，”葛（音）先生说。
20年前他们曾经试图在上海街头禁止睡衣。那次活动没有引起重视，最后废弃了。当地的退休中老年人说他们短时间内是不会放弃他们的睡衣的

  The world and its scene are changing. So, I don't think it's a big dealwhat people particularly wear these days. The most important thing isthat they are comfortable and modest in apperance. Hence, attentionshould be paid to more serious matters.

• Does it matter what people are wearing, if there comfortable, let themwear what they like. The pyjama police !! whatever next, haven't theygot anything better to do. If people walked down the street naked,you'de have something to complain about. leave them alone, there doingno one any harm. If I choose to walk down the street in a bikini, thatsmy business, but then I surpose the bikini police would be after me.

  I thought this was unique to Liverpool. You wouldn't believe the numberof women that are out and about in the evenings, picking up dinner,groceries and the like in their pj's and slippers. And as for a Sundaymorning when they're out getting the papers!!!My favourite incident wasstaying at a top city centre hotel for a Saturday night at the sametime as a wedding reception. The next morning the majority of thefemale guests were wandering around reception and restaurant in(clearly brand new) silk pj's. Maybe it's the influence of the largeChina Town in Liverpool.

•          我认为这是利物浦独一无二的景象。你肯定不会相信一大群女人傍晚穿着睡衣拖鞋在外面买菜，购物。周六早上出门拿报纸的时候一样！让我记忆深刻的是有一个周六的晚上，我在一家顶极城市中心酒店里面做婚礼接待，第二天早上，绝大多数的女客人都穿着崭新的真丝睡衣在接待处和餐厅乱转。没准真是利物浦的大中国城造成的影响呢

我对于老上海人喜欢穿睡衣在街上晃没啥意见。虽然第一次看到有点儿吃惊，嗯…… 或许应该说吓一跳，不过就算是看不惯那也是我的事情，如果说要是告诉人家“这个不文明，你不该……你应该……”之类的，感觉却是管得太宽了。

不过老外真是无聊，居委会做这种“劝化”也是因为没有其他的事情好做了，而且居委会也不可能强迫任何人“远离”他们的睡衣，居然扯到警察上去了，这记者是真的缺乏常识？还是今天没啥爆炸性的政治正确新闻可报，所以连早都存在了那么久的鸡毛蒜皮（在我记忆里，上海的居委会大妈们可不是今天突然开始劝居民不要穿睡衣上街的）都要挖出来炒冷饭，不仅炒，还加料

不过，老外那里也有穿睡衣上街女人们，我还是头一次知道，本来还以为这算是上海特色呢。
