TOE NAKATA, SHOP ASSISTANT, YOKOHAMA

Toe NAKATA,

Iwork in a shop and I see evidence of the recession every day. EverydayI see sales go down and fewer and fewer people walk in.The shop sellssoaps and body care goods. These are non-essentials,made for fun andhobbies or for children. People who are not spending money do not spendon this.
People are now busy spending their income on food and rentandessential things like that. There is not much extra money forspending on other things.
That goes for me as well. I stopped spending money on CDs and books. There are lot more things i want to buy than I actually do.
Peopleare very worried about the economy. There is news on that topic everyday and every night. People are always talking about how much worse itis getting.
It seems as if there is no end to the bad situation. People are really nervous and it's like talk has replaced spending.

Luckily my husband has been working and my son who is about to graduate from university has got a job in a Japanese company.

Butthere are still risks. We hear that final year students inuniversitywho have been offered jobs have since been told that the company cannottake them because of the downturn. It does make me worry. Those studentshave to stay in university for one more year spending money on tuition. Some universities have said they will give discounts for the comingyear. People are worried they might not be able to find a job even intwo years time. People expect this to last along time.
I amfreelance interpreter, and government licensed tour guideand up untilthe middle of this year, it was business as usual. But we have noticedthat we have not had the same number of job offers as last year.
Ithink the government should do more. We have a new primeminister but hehasn't set out concrete measures on how he plans to improve the currentsituation.

Irun an English-speaking conversation school and business is going asusual even though it is a recession. People here think it is a priorityto master English. But this is a severe recession. I am also aconsultant for small to medium-sized enterprises in this town and Ihave several clients who have suffered badly. One of them is in thesemiconductor industry and their productivity has halved. We can't getany orders for them.
People try not to spend any money because they don't see a bright future. They try to be prudent.
InNagaoka the main business is industry and it is badly affected. Some ofmy students who are employed in industry say they haven't seenrecession like this before.

Iam going on holiday to Korea because the strength of the yen relativeto the Korean currency makes it worth while financially. There are joblosses in Japan. Temporary contract workers are being cut. This is oneof the biggest issues affecting us today.
Fortunately, I depend onmy father at the moment because I am a postgraduate student so I am notdirectly affected. I live in a city with big shopping malls and I dosee people there. But they are only looking at the products and notbuying.
There are many Japanese Brazilian workers here andunfortunately companies are cutting these workers first of all. Theyare now wandering the city, jobless and I can't help but feel a littlebit worried about that.
