元宵节快乐.jpg

The Lantern Festival (Simplified Chinese: 元宵节; Traditional Chinese: 元宵節/元宵; pinyin: yuánxiāojié) or (Yuanxiao Festival), also known as the Shang Yuan Festival(上元节), is a Chinese festival celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first month in the lunar year in the Chinese calendar.(阴历 yinli) It is not to be confused with the Mid-Autumn Festival(中秋节  zhongqiujie), which is also sometimes known as the "Lantern Festival" in locations such as Hong Kong, Singapore, and Malaysia.

The Chinese Lantern Festival is the last day of the traditional Chinese New Year(中国新年) celebration period. The Lantern Festival is also known as the Little New Year(小年) since it marks the end of the series of celebrations starting from the Chinese New Year. Koreans celebrate this festival as the Daeboreum.

During the Lantern Festival, children go out at night carrying bright lanterns(灯笼 denglong). In ancient times, the lanterns were fairly simple, for only the emperor (皇帝 huangdi)and noblemen had large ornate ones; in modern times, lanterns have been embellished with many complex designs. For example, lanterns are now often made in shapes of animals.

Traditionally, the date once served as a day for love and matchmaking(媒人  meiren). It was one of the few nights in ancient times without a strict curfew. Young people were chaperoned in the streets in hopes of finding love. Matchmakers acted busily in hopes of pairing couples. The brightest lanterns were symbolic of good luck and hope.
Those who do not carry lanterns often enjoy watching informal lantern parades(游行 youxing).

Other popular activities at this festival include eating tangyuan (Simplified Chinese: 汤圆; Traditional Chinese: 湯圓; pinyin: tāngyuán), a sweet glutinous rice dumpling served in a sugary soup, and guessing lantern riddles, (猜灯谜  cai dengmi)often messages of love.

If Must Love Me  by Elizabeth Barrett Browning

If thou must love me, let it be for naught
Except for love's sake only. Don't say,

"I love her for her smile — her look — her way
Of speaking gently, — for a trick of thought
That falls in well with mine, and certes brought
A sense of pleasant ease on such a day—“

For these things in themselves, Beloved, may
Be changed, or change for thee — and love, so wrought,
May be unwrought so. Neight love me for
Thine own dear pity's wiping my cheeks dry.

A creature might forget to weep, who bore
Thy comfort long, and lose thy love thereby!

But love me for love's sake, that evenmore
Thou mayst love on, through love's eternity.
