The Federal Opposition has called on the Government toexplain why Chinese authorities have been briefed on Australia's newdefence blueprint before the Coalition.

The lead author of the Government's defence white paper, MichaelPezzullo, has been sent to China to discuss the document ahead of itsrelease.

The white paper outlines Australia's defence needs for the next 20years and beyond and makes recommendations on equipment the Governmentshould buy.

The Opposition's defence spokesman David Johnston says it is curiousthe Chinese government has been consulted before the Australian people.
在野党国防发言人大卫·约翰森说，他对政府在征求本国人民的意见之前先征求中国政府的意见感到奇怪。
"Our neighbours and our trading partners are getting a full andfrank briefing from the likes of Mr Pezzullo who is a very seniordefence official and I find it quite curious that the opposition can'tget a briefing," Mr Johnston said.
He says the Government should be taking a bi-partisan approach to matters of defence.

"I just find it curious that Mr Pezzullo would go to China and otherplaces to brief people without the Opposition being informed broadlywhat's going on, but that's the way this government does its business."
