General Motors has made a new debt-exchange proposal to unsecured bondholders in a last-ditch move to speed its way through bankruptcy court.

Although a final decision has not yet been taken on whether the ailing carmaker will file for Chapter 11 protection in coming days, a source familiar with the issue disclosed that the US government would provide more than $50bn to fund the carmaker’s operations during a stay in bankruptcy and to support the restructured company that emerges.
