Four people have been killed and 53 remain missingafter heavy rains triggered a landslide in a remote and mountainous area of south-west China on Thursday, the government said。

The victims were construction labourers who had been working on adam in Kangding county, an area traditionally populated by ethnicTibetans in Sichuan province, according to a statement on the civil affairs ministry's website.

根据民政部网站的声明，死者均为康定长河坝电站工地施工人员，康定是四川省一个藏族传统聚居区。

The state-run Xinhua news agency said the disaster occurred at 3:00am (local time) and also blocked a local river, causing a lake to buildup behind the rubble.

据新华社报道，灾难发生在当地时间凌晨三点，暴雨引发的泥石流冲入大渡河导致河道阻塞，形成堰塞湖。

Three other people were injured and 97 "trapped," the ministry said.

民政部消息：另有三人受伤，97人“被困”。

However, Xinhua reported that those trapped had been rescued.

"The heavy rains yesterday and today caused the landslides," said an official at the emergency headquarters of the Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, where Kangding is located.

“昨天和今天的暴雨引发了泥石流。”设在甘孜藏族自治州康定县的紧急指挥部一位官员说。

According to China National Radio, a stretch of highway nearly threekilometres long was engulfed by the landslide, while electricity to thearea was cut and communications disrupted.
