THE biggest snow dump in 59 years and freezing temperatures not experienced in decades have caused chaos across northern China and the Koreas.
Blizzards swept the area, stranding tens of thousands of airport passengers and causing traffic chaos, in a cold snap that is forecast to run into next week.
Schools were shuttered in Beijing and the port city of Tianjin yesterday after more than 30cm of snow fell on Sunday - the most since 1951 - bringing traffic in the Chinese capital to a standstill. More than 90 per cent of flights were cancelled or delayed. Only one of Beijing International Airport's runways remained open.
Temperatures plunged. Beijing's range was -16C to -10C. Minimums of -32C were expected across the far north as a Siberian cold front approached.
The China Daily reported that in China's coldest region of Heilongjiang province, the mercury had already plummeted to -36C.
Airports at major provincial centres Tianjin, Hohhot and Shijiazhuang were shut and scores of flights were cancelled out of Seoul.
Highways across China were closed by snow.
The government has ordered 300,000 people to help clear roads, and gas supplies are expected to be strained.
"The temperature in Beijing is expected to hit the lowest in half a century with the minimum reaching 16C below zero," Guo Hu, head of the Beijing meteorological bureau, said on Sunday.
