最佳：亚伯拉罕•林肯第二次就职
1865年3月4日



这是最具原创性、最真诚的致辞。纠结于最困难的问题：上帝站在哪一方？还有最广为人知的名言：“不要以怨恨相对，应以慈悲为怀……”


最佳：富兰克林•D•罗斯福第一次就职
1933年3月4日



在大萧条时期最黑暗的时刻激励了国家：“因此，首先允许我申明我的坚定信念：我们唯一值得恐惧的就是恐惧本身……”


最佳：托马斯•杰斐逊第一次就职
1801年3月4日



请求超越党派之分。杰斐逊说：“我们都是共和党人，我们都是联邦制拥护者。”但是他的声音太小了，很多人都没有听到。


最佳：约翰•F•肯尼迪
1961年1月20日

最差：威廉•亨利•哈里森
1981年3月4日

最差：约翰•昆西•亚当斯
1825年3月4日

Best: Thomas Jefferson's First
March 4, 1801

A plea to rise above partisanship. “We are all Republicans, we are all Federalists,” Jefferson said. But he spoke in a voice so low that he was apparently not heard—then or now.

Best: John F. Kennedy
Jan. 20, 1961

The most beautifully and memorably written: “And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country.” But the speech overpromised: “[W]e shall pay any price, bear any burden.”

Best: Theodore Roosevelt
March 4, 1905

The ultimate paean to American greatness by the man who invented the “bully pulpit”: “Upon the success of our experiment much depends, not only as regards our own welfare, but as regards the welfare of mankind.”

Worst: William Henry Harrison
March 4, 1981

At two hours, the longest inaugural speech ever. “Upon another occasion I have given my opinion at some length upon the impropriety of Executive interference in the legislation of Congress.” Harrison caught a cold and died a month later.

Worst: John Quincy Adams
March 4, 1825

Elected by the House of Representatives in the so-called Corrupt Bargain, he took self-effacement a little too far: “Less possessed of your confidence in advance than any of my predecessors, I am deeply conscious of the prospect that I shall stand more and oftener in need of your indulgence.”

Worst: James Buchanan
March 4, 1857

Suffering from dysentery, Buchanan predicted, wrongly, that the Supreme Court would solve the slavery issue. “May we not, then, hope that the long agitation on this subject is approaching its end ...?”
