No Dragon
Well, it wasn't a dragon but it was spectacular nonetheless. Li Ning lit it but you still have to see it.
And now come the fireworks. We saw a rehearsal Sunday night: spectacular.
Long show. Don't give up on it.

Gymnast Flies
Former Chinese gymnast Li Ning, an Olympic gold medalist, is holding the torch and "flying" around the top of the bowl. Now he is "running." This is impossible to describe but pretty amazing. I am not sure if he's going to light the cauldron or not. Dragon unavailable?

Spoiler Alert: Final Torch Bearer
After three hours and 45 minutes, the Olympic flame entered the stadium carried by shooter Xu Haifeng, China's first Olympic gold medal winner. Xu passed the flame to Gao Min, a diving Olympic gold medalist for China. She ran about 100 meters and touched the tip of the torch carried by Li Xiaoshuang, an Olympic gold medal winner in gymnastics. Li handed the flame off to Zhan Xugang, weightlifting gold medal winner, who passed the flame to Zhang Jun, gold medal winner in badminton.

Zhang took the torch to the foot of the steps at the end of the stadum oval, handing off to Chen Zhong, a taekwondo gold medal winner. Chen then ran through the sea of athletes on the field to the center of the stadium and climbing steps to touch the torch of Sun Jinfang, a two-time volleyball world champion. Sun carried the torch out of the center, through another sea of athletes. She then ran up a set of stairs and passed the torch to Li Ning, gymnastics gold medal winner, who was suddenly lifted via transparent ropes to near the top of the enormous stadium, three massive tiers above. Li pretended to run across a field as he was conveyed around the top of the stadium, suspended by the ropes and highlighted with spotlights. Surely he was making his way to another torch bearer, the final one?

Finally, after a full rotation around the top-most rim of the 91,000 seat venue, Li touched his torch to what appeared to be part of the metallic striping on the wall. It wasn't. The striping caught fire, burning up to the base of the giant torch affixed to the top of the stadium. The flame wound its way around the torch as if it were climbing a staircase and, finally, just a few minutes short of four hours after the start of the Ceremonies, the flame blazed and the Games had officially begun.

China Arrives!
Exactly three hours into the ceremony, a roar began to emerge from near the tunnel through which the athletes processed. With the appearance of the Chinese flag, and basketball superstar Yao Ming carrying it, the roar intensified, resounding inside the Bird's Nest.

中国来啦！
开幕式恰好三个小时了，运动员经过通道附近时呼声开始发出。随着中国国旗的出现，篮球巨星姚明执旗，呼声密集，在鸟巢内回荡。

Fans stood and swayed and waved red-and-white scarves wildly as the largest Olympic delegation filed in, its more-than 600 athletes stretching out over more than 200 meters. President Hu Jintao got huge cheers when he appeared on the large screen, looking happy but reserved. The men wore red jackets and yellow shirts with white pants. The women wore yellow jackets with red blouses and white skirts. Nearly all carried tiny Chinese flags as the crowd cheered and chanted for more than 10 straight minutes.

Meet New Asia
Everywhere, you hear it. Asia is young, terminally hip, utterly digital, educated in business, on the way to rich, casually multi-lingual, materialistic by default setting, transparently shallow yet fetchingly friendly, star-struck, fame-centric, in a desperate hurry, fascinated with America as a role model and yet set to absorb our best ideas, spin them one turn better and, before we know it, pass us like a bullet train.
So, meet young Itgel Munkh, 19, from Ulaabaator, Mongolia. As I stood in the second deck of the Bird's Nest, before the Opening Ceremonies for the '08 Olympics, I heard a voice behind me say, "Wow! Look how close the seats are up here, dude. This is awesome."

Americans Enter
Well into a long, demonstration-free parade of nations, the United States emerged with a large part of their 600 strong participating. The U.S. team earned a solid roar that sounded at least partly positive.

Artistic director Zhang Yimou used 14,000 performers, 9,000 from the nation's army, and an additional 600 to put on the fireworks displays.

The elevated globe that produced the splendid final act weighed 16 tons. One hundred and ten minutes of music were specially composed by 18 artists, and there were 15,153 sets of costumes in 47 styles.

Torchbearers Named
Organizers just released the list of torchbearers, all former Chinese Olympians: Xu Haifeng (shooting), Gao Min (diving), Li Xiaoshuang (gymnastics), Zhan Xugang (weighlifting), Zhang Jun (badminton), Chen Zhong (taekwondo), Sun Jinfang (volleyball) and Li Ning (gymnastics).
No word on who will light the cauldron.

火炬手名字

Around the World in a Minutes
Don't miss the part in which the giant ball emerges from beneath the stage. It's covered with Chinese acrobats, arranged at nine equidistant lines of latitude, who circle the globe, walking, somersaulting, etc.

Soon a depiction of the oceans and continents emerge, and the acrobats continue their movements. Not sure how the guys on the bottom, who are running upside down, pull this off. As the song "You and Me" is sung, thousands of real Olympic volunteers, not professional performers, emerge holding large photos of children from around the world. Touching moment.
Looks like the athletes are coming next. Colorfully and extravagantly costumed dancers representing China's 56 ethnic groups perform to ready the way.
