Tibet
At Vapriikki on 13 June 2008 – 13 April 2009
Tibet lies on a high plateau in the Himalayas known as The Roof of the World, which has the largest mountain range and the highest snow-capped peaks in the world. While Tibet is far away from oceans, the greatest rivers in the Asian continent have their sources there. The culture of Tibet has fascinated the Western mind for centuries.
Tibetans are one of the most religious peoples in the world. Religion and everyday life go hand in hand for them, and art is the manifestation of the sacred in everyday life. Sacred art can enable us to understand where mere language fails. Religious symbolism is evident even in the most mundane objects.
Tibetan Buddhism is a unique form of Buddhism whose distinctive characteristics are monasteries and lamas, spiritual leaders. Government in Tibet is traditionally based on religion, with both secular and spiritual powers bestowed upon reincarnated religious leaders, the highest of whom is the Dalai Lama.
Tibet is a distinct cultural area with a very old written language. Over the centuries, Tibet has variously been a major power and an independent nation state, but also been comprised of a scattered group of tribal fiefdoms and small principalities. Tibet is divided into Central Tibet and its surrounding regions, which are today part of the neighbouring states of China, Nepal, India and Pakistan. Only Bhutan is an independent Tibetan state.
Tibetans love elaborately decorated objects and rich colours. Wealth is displayed by wearing valuable and beautiful jewellery. Although many areas in the country are isolated and the mountain passes are impenetrable in the winter, there has always been cultural exchange in Tibet, with silk, porcelain and lacquerwork making their way from China to Tibet carried by monks, lamas and traders.
The TIBET exhibition at Museum Centre Vapriikki opens a window into traditional Tibetan culture, presenting the full range of culture, from that of farmers and herdsmen to monks and other inhabitants of the monasteries.
Objects in the exhibition are all on loan from Finnish museums and private collections. The material includes many pieces never before seen publicly: lavishly decorated ceremonial objects, sculpture, thangkas, magnificent jewellery, rugs and furniture. Some of the objects come to the show at Vapriikki directly from a field trip made to Tibet during the past 12 months.
An extensive and lavishly illustrated book about Tibetan culture and history will be published in Finnish and English to coincide with the exhibition. The essays in the book are written by renowned experts in this field. A lecture series on Tibet will be arranged in autumn 2008.
