Homeless charities' Christmas campaigns are under way, amid fears the new year could see homelessness surge as people struggle to keep up with their mortgage payments.

"I can't believe what a difference this place has made," 23-year-old Neil said, with a big grin on his face.

"Just three-and-a-half weeks ago I was sleeping rough and moving from hostel to hostel.

Neil is one of 20 formerly homeless people living at Emmaus Bristol.

It is the very opposite of a temporary Christmas refuge.

Tucked away in a narrow back-street behind Temple Meads railway station, it provides a permanent place to stay while residents get their lives back together.

The charity which runs Emmaus pays residents (or "companions" as they like to be called) to work in a warehouse over the road, giving them new skills which could help them find a job.

The emphasis is on helping people to help themselves.

"But working here means I have an address, I have money, I have a CV.

Dave Perry, who runs the centre, said they still saw people made homeless for a wide variety of reasons.

"Yes, we still have people who have ended up on the streets because of drug problems - or who have left the military and find themselves without a roof over their heads.

"But the economic situation means we are also seeing more and more people who are becoming homeless for financial reasons.

"When you first start doing it, it's like, you can't sleep for the first week, and then you just get used to it," 20-year-old Alan Cooper said.

“刚开始的时候，你根本就睡不着，后来你就慢慢习惯了”，20岁的Alan Cooper说。

He has been sleeping rough in Guildford for six months, and has only just got a bed in a homeless shelter.

"I was with my dad when I was younger, basically he couldn't handle me so I got put into care, and I went through five or six different care homes.
"I had so much bad stuff happen in my past, it's like, life goes on, it's just another bad thing."

He had been sleeping in alcoves and in a car park before he got a bed at a shelter. But without a job, he spends his days at a drop-in community centre.

"If I didn't come here I could get arrested, every day, instead I come here and keep myself out of trouble."

Cat Wood's Salford home is immaculate. The tree is dressed and the presents are wrapped for Christmas.

But once the decorations come down she and her nine-year-old daughter will be forced to move out.

Her landlady is being repossessed and the local housing association told her it would not be able to find her a new home before Christmas.
"It's really scary.

Cat has just joined more than 1.6 million other people waiting for a home.

With repossessions on the rise, the list is expected to grow, but ironically the number of empty homes is increasing too.

New-build flats and terraces in Manchester and Salford and many other cities are just as likely to be lying vacant as run-downter races.

But Ms Wood can not afford the rents charged for redeveloped homes just streets away from her.

"There's so many empty houses that are available, yet I'm on the housing list and they just turned around and said I'm not guaranteed a house before February," she said.

David, 35, is living in a small flat in a unit of supported accommodation in Glasgow.

He became homeless when he fell behind with his mortgage payments and lost his home.

He began to take heroin and spent about 10 years on the streets and in hostels, which he said he hated.

"It was very violent and intimidating, because I'm not really a nasty guy, although I'm quite big but I'm a gentle giant.

Now he is one of hundreds of former hostel residents given help towards independent living.

He spends 20 hours a week learning life skills, such as learning how to do the shopping and pay council tax, and is aiming to get a new job.

"I've been here for 14 months... I can't believe my luck."
