March 4 (Bloomberg) -- China said France has tarnished its own “good tradition” by permitting the sale of two Qing Dynasty bronzes that were taken by foreign troops in 1860.

The auction will not add anything positive to the good tradition of the country in which it was hosted,” said Li Zhaoxing, spokesman of China’s legislature and ex-foreign minister, at a Beijing press conference, ahead of the annual meeting of lawmakers. “It will only have the opposite effect.”

The two animal-head sculptures, of a rabbit and a rat, were auctioned on Feb. 25 in Paris as part of the sale of Yves Saint Laurent’s art collection held by the late French designer’s partner Pierre Berge. This week, a Chinese dealer said he placed the winning bid of 31.4 million ($39 million) on the items and won’t be paying.

Yesterday, China’s foreign ministry reiterated its call for the sculptures to be returned to the country. The heads were severed from a water clock in Beijing’s Summer Palace.

Addressing Berge, Li said he’s hurt the interest of his country and the dignity of the Chinese.

“You’ve gained a lot from this business. Do you feel embarrassed?” Li said.

Li said the sales proceeds shouldn’t be considered legal, as the items are “plundered from another country.”

昨日，中国外交部重申了必须把雕像归还的要求。这些兽首是北京夏宫的喷泉装饰。


至于贝尔热，李说他已经伤害了他国家的利益以及中国人的尊严


李说：你已经从这次生意上赚了大钱啦。难道不会觉得羞耻吗？


李又说：这次拍卖员被就是不合法的。因为这些拍卖品都是从其他国家掠夺过来的。
