(CNN) -- A bomb threat forced authorities in China's remote northwestern Xinjiang Autonomous Region to bar a plane from landing in the city of Urumqi, the Chinese state-run news agency Xinhua reported Sunday.

Citing police sources, Xinhua said the plane -- which was en route from Afghanistan -- initially had been reported as hijacked.

新华社引用警方消息称这架从阿富汗起飞的飞机此前据报告被人劫机。

Aviation authorities have issued an order prohibiting the plane from landing in Urumqi, the news agency said. However, police and emergency vehicles rushed to the airport to respond if necessary.

Xinjiang was the scene of clashes last month between Han Chinese and the province's Uyghur population, a predominantly Muslim ethnic group.
