在世界动画电影中有一种新兴的摄制类型，即通过“表演捕捉”的方式，捕捉演员的真实表演，进而通过计算机技术将演员的表演通过虚拟的动画人物表现出来，即除了人物的外表是动画制作的外，所有动作表演和面部表情都是由真实的演员来完成的，通过计算机的合成将表演动作与虚拟的人物完美结合在一起。2004年11月由华纳兄弟影片公司出品的动画电影《极地特快》（The Polar Express）就是这样一部完全由电脑CGI动画技术创造出来的杰作。这部改编自同名小说，以圣诞精神为题材的电影，同时也是历史上第一部MAX类型的3D电影长片。

      本片根据克里斯·范·奥斯伯格的同名儿童小说改编而成。1985年，这本小说发表后，马上变成热门圣诞礼品，读者一下超过200万，而且成为传承至今的圣诞节礼物，翌年，奥斯伯格凭借此书第二次获得美国最具权威的绘本大奖凯迪克金牌奖。故事立足于儿童与成人对于圣诞老人的信仰与看法。除去基督耶稣诞生（对于基督诞生的日期尚存争议，但这与小说、电影都无任何关系）的宗教色彩，圣诞老人是圣诞节的象征。尽管对于圣诞老人是否存在，和他的确切身份与生活年代仍存在诸多争议，但这无碍于孩子们对于圣诞老人的期盼。传说中的圣诞老人会在圣诞前夜驾着由驯鹿拉的雪橇，将礼物送到千家万户。然而，随着人类社会的不断进步，已经没有什么人再相信这个流传了很久的传说，没有人再相信圣诞老人的存在了。然而，小男孩克劳斯(乔什·哈切森配音)却不这么认为，他一面期盼着圣诞老人的出现，一面又对圣诞老人的存在心存疑虑。然而当一个圣诞前夜，一部极地特快停在他的面前时，一切都为之改变。

      为本片配乐的是电影音乐大师Alan Silvestri，在他享有的5次美国作曲家、作者与出版者协会(ASCAP)大奖中，有两次是出于罗伯特·泽米吉斯的影片配乐，分别是《荒岛余生》和《危机四伏》。此外，他还曾凭借《谁陷害了兔子罗杰》和《回到未来》获格莱美提名，在1995年还以《阿甘正传》被奥斯卡和金球奖提名。本片是他同罗伯特·泽米吉斯的第11次合作。
     这部电影的原声碟共有14首曲目：其中几首更是由在片中一人饰演五个角色的好莱坞影星汤姆·汉克斯亲自演唱。
