The danger China poses
Eugene Robinson [“The wrong way to talk to China,” op-ed, Nov. 30] took issue with the “tough on China” stance of Republican presidential candidates, but he downplays the core contentious elements in the U.S.-China relationship, which go well beyond disputes over exchange rates and software piracy.
While acknowledging the profound systemic differences between the two countries, Mr. Robinson did not mention geopolitical dimensions of the conflict, such as China’s build-up of naval and air forces in the Western Pacific, its territorial ambitions vis-a-vis Taiwan and the Spratly Islands, the massive expansion of its nuclear and ballistic missile arsenals, its aggressive espionage and cyberwarfare operations in the United States, and its increasingly intrusive presence in America’s Latin American and Caribbean back yard.
While China has moved beyond its Communist past, it is not just another large Asian country like, say, India. Rather, its behavior suggests that of a potentially dangerous global competitor, a reality that the seeming complementarity of the U.S. and Chinese economies cannot obscure.
