For the first time in memory, a foreign flag is flying at the Iowa Statehouse.
The flag of the People’s Republic of China has been hoisted at the bottom of the grand staircase in honor of today’s Iowa visit by Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping.
The librarians at the State Law Library of Iowa said the senior members of the Capitol’s building and grounds crew, who raise and lower the flags, have no anecdotal memories of any foreign flags being raised at the capitol, so in their opinions, it would be highly unusual to do so.
A quick search of news clippings doesn’t reveal any articles mentioning foreign flags at the Capitol or on the Capitol grounds.
The large star is said to stand for Chinese Communist Party, while the four smaller stars represent the social classes of the people – the proletariat, the peasants, the petty bourgeoisie, and the “patriotic capitalist,” according to the Encyclopedia Britannica online.
The field of red in Chinese flag represents the revolutionary communist philosophy that has dominated China since 1949. ” Red is also the traditional ethnic colour of the Han, who form the overwhelming majority in the country,” according to Britannica.
The flags flying today in the Iowa Capitol meet U.S. flag protocol: flags the same size, same height, with the U.S. flag in the correct position.
