Dalai Lama welcomes serious talks with China

Associated Press
Saturday, April 26, 2008 (New Delhi)

Dalai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual icon on his arrival at New Delhi from the US on Saturday welcomed China's decision to hold talks with his emissaries, but, said, the dialogue must be serious.

The Dalai Lama was reacting to China's readiness expressed on Friday to a meeting with an envoy of the exiled leader, a step that follows weeks of calls from world leaders for dialogue in the wake of anti-government protests in Tibet.

''Of course, talks it depends what kind of talks. If (they are) serious talks, most welcome, just mere seeing face to face, not much meaning,'' said the Dalai Lama on being questioned on his arrival from the US after a two-week trip.

Meanwhile, his spokesman said on Friday that the Dalai Lama had received no communication yet from China over any meeting with government officials.
Earlier, China's state-run Xinhua news agency reported, citing official sources, that Chinese officials will meet representatives of the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism.

In Tibet, the recent protests against five decades of Chinese rule have been the largest and most sustained in almost two decades. China says 22 people died in violence in the Lhasa protests, while overseas Tibet supporters say many times that number have been killed in protests and the security crackdown across Tibetan regions of western China.

China has accused the Dalai Lama of being involved in the uprising. The Tibetan leader has said that he wants greater autonomy for the remote mountain region but is not seeking independence.

The demonstrations that have spread worldwide have galvanized critics of the Communist regime in China and thrown a shadow over the Beijing Olympics. Protests have disrupted the Olympic torch relay, and world leaders - including President Bush, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd - have urged Beijing to open talks with the Dalai Lama.

India, which hosts Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama and his government-in-exile, has seen a wave of protests since the Chinese crackdown on anti-government demonstrations in Tibet last month.
