A Sydney man will face court next month accused of running a scam using vending machines and thousands of damaged Australian coins imported from China.

Officers say the 26-year-old was spotted swapping damaged two-dollar coins for undamaged ones at vending machines in Chatswood, in Sydney's north, earlier this month.

He's been charged with obtaining a benefit by deception.

Detective Inspector Peter Yeomans, from the North Shore Local Area Command, says police found 9,000 damaged two-dollar coins on the man, and at his home in Rydalmere.

He says police are investigating whether the Royal Australian Mint had sent the coins to China so they could be melted for scrap metal.

"We've spoken to various vendors and they said that this has been a problem for some time,' he said.

"In saying that, this is the first person that I know of with this amount of coins."
