Aftershock fears force survivors outdoors

AM - Tuesday, 20 May, 2008

TONY EASTLEY: Thousands of people across south-western China spent the night outdoors because of fears of a major aftershock from last week's massive earthquake. People have taken bedding, furniture, clothes and other possessions out of their homes looking for safe open ground. At Mianyang, the Women and Children's Hospital has moved patients into the square outside the city's railway station, while thousands more have poured onto the streets of Chengdu - one of the cities badly affected by the original quake. It's now estimated 71,000 people are dead, missing or buried. AM's Stephen McDonell is one of the few foreign journalists to have reached the region around the epicentre of the earthquake from where he filed this report.

STEPHEN MCDONELL: The picturesque town of Yingxiu was in middle of forest-covered mountains in Wenchuan County. It was a popular place to visit for bushwalkers. Sitting at the epicentre of last week's powerful earthquake it was destroyed in two minutes flat when the quake hit. The survivors were cut off from the outside world without electricity or the means to rescue people caught under the rubble. Thousands of Chinese troops have since gone in - some in helicopters, some in boats, others walking.

Foreign journalists are being prevented from getting anywhere near the disaster zone. So we walked in for 12 hours over the mountains to get to Yingxiu. What we saw on arrival is a place of utter devastation. Not one building can be preserved. The search for survivors is effectively over. Soldiers in chemical suits are spraying everywhere to prevent an outbreak of disease caused by thousands of dead bodies. They're concentrated around the schools where the dead are many in number. When the earthquake hit there were some 11,000 people in Yingxiu. By the time we arrived there, they had only found 2,400. Imagine living in a place where 80 per cent of the people in your city were simply killed out of the blue.

(Sound of walking on rubble)
Those who remain here have no idea what the future will bring. Some people are walking in the street surrounded by rubble on both sides and staring into space as if they don't know what hit them. We spoke some of the few locals still here living under sheets of plastic or cloth. Many don't know where to go.

CHINESE GIRL (translated): My grandfather, my aunt and my cousin were all buried. One was in the school. One was at home and one was working over there. CHINESE MAN (translated): What worries me next is a mass outbreak of disease. If the Government handles things well, it shouldn't be a big problem.

STEPHEN MCDONELL: At one point we were talking to some of the survivors when a girl about 5-years-old walked up to the ABC's cameraman Rob Hill and gave him a packet of instant noodles. In the depths of the worst misery possible, people are looking after each other and clinging onto their humanity.

Yingxiu will have to be bulldozed completely and rebuilt from scratch. It's also surrounded by mountains which have shed their skin and continue to crumble down into the valley - boulders the size of caravans have smashed trucks into the ground. It's still a dangerous place to be. At night people sit by the river and burn the clothes of their dead family members - they're mostly children's clothes.

This is Stephen McDonell at earthquake epicentre in Yingxiu for AM.
