BEIJING – World Bank President Robert Zoellick warned Monday that 2009 will prove to be a "very difficult" year for China and the world amid the financial downturn, but said the Chinese government's efforts to shore up the country's own economy will help aid global stability.

"The best way China can help support the world economy at this time is through the efforts China has taken to strengthen its own growth and recovery," he said during a press conference in Beijing.

The World Bank recently slashed its forecast for China's growth in 2009 from 9.2 percent to 7.5 percent due in part to the worldwide financial crisis. Though those rates are high for most countries, it represents a significant drop from the double-digit growth that has fueled China's economic rise in recent years.

Zoellick also urged China to avoid protectionist measures that could hurt international trade and remain flexible in its plans to deal with the global crisis.

He said his biggest concern was the potential impact of the economic crisis on the world's poorest nations, adding that problems such as rising unemployment "could lead to social and political unrest."

Zoellick, who arrived in China on Sunday, initially flew to quake-stricken Sichuan Province where the World Bank is providing a $710 million loan aimed at helping Sichuan and Gansu provinces rebuild everything from roads to health facilities and schools. Nearly 70,000 people were killed during the May 12 disaster, and another 20,000 are considered missing and presumed dead.

He met with President Hu Jintao Monday and has meetings scheduled with other senior leaders in the next couple days. He leaves China on Wednesday.
