A BEIJING court is hearing the extraordinary case of the world's oldest alleged conman, a 99-year-old man who faces 10 years in jail.

The prosecution's case against Zhou Zhiping is that he claimed he was really Li Liejun, a political follower of Sun Yat-sen, the founder of modern China early in the 20th century, and then of his successor as leader of the Nationalist Party, Chiang Kai-shek.

Li was appointed by Chiang as governor of Jiangxi province in southern China, and died in 1946.

The prosecution said Mr Zhou pretended that shortly before the communists under Mao Zedong won the civil war against the Nationalistsin 1949, he - as Li - had used his official position to buy a massive amount of US government bonds, and had placed them in foreign banks.

Mr Zhou was said to have worked through younger accomplices, Xiao Wanni, 50, and Wang Shengkun, 58, who have each denied the charges.

The court heard that they convinced a US citizen, a Mr Chen - whose given name was withheld - that Mr Zhou, as Li, could retrieve these funds, now worth trillions of dollars, despite their being initially frozen by the US Government.

In return for Mr Chen's help in funding the retrieval process, they would split the money.

Mr Zhou allegedly told Mr Chen that the code that needed to be retrieved to release the vast store of bonds had to be obtained from certain US bank notes with successive serial numbers. This required the purchase of large amounts of notes.

Mr Chen, 74, a scientist with physics and chemistry doctorates, wanted to use the secret Nationalist treasure for his research. He gave Mr Zhou 794,000 yuan ($171,000) to buy the money Mr Zhou said he needed, between April 2007 and June last year.

Mr Zhou denied all charges, saying: "I'm not guilty. I won't be jailed."

But the judge at the Chaoyang District People's Court said he faced at least 10 years in prison.

Mr Zhou is the oldest person to have stood trial in Beijing.

The alleged scam is not new. Many similar frauds have been constructed around the myth of secret stores of old Nationalist money, even though the Nationalists themselves carried considerable wealth over to Taiwan, after retreating there in 1949.

Such stories of hidden treasure retain their lure in part because they are so common around the country.

Chinese people have traditionally hoarded their savings, rather than expose them to potential seizure or taxation by the state.

The trial continues.
