TAIPEI, March 11 (Reuters) - Taiwan said on Wednesday a clearing system between Taiwanese and Chinese currencies needs to be set up before the island allows mainland tourists to use their China Unionpay ATM cards in Taiwan.

Chairman Sean Chen of Taiwan's Financial Supervisory Commission told legislators the Mainland Affairs Council, which orchestrates the island's China policy, will have to decide when the system will be in place.

Taiwan, whose ties with China have improved, is running behind schedule to let mainlanders use the ATM cards as debit cards here, as part of wider efforts to expand tourism with China to boost the island's sagging economy.

If the plans materialise, the move could eventually make China's currency <CNY=>, called the renminbi or yuan, widely accepted in Taiwan for the first time since the Communists defeated the Nationalists in the Chinese civil war that ended in 1949.
