China claims sovereignty over S China Sea islands

China has claimed sovereignty over a chain of islands in the South China Sea on the day a United Nations deadline for sea border claims expires.
The UN has received applications from other countries including the Philippines, Malaysia and Vietnam, which also claim sovereignty over the islands.
If China's claim is upheld it will be able to control vital shipping lanes.
The islands are also thought to contain large oil and gas reserves.
