Free trade pact with China could boost economy by $146bn

ABILATERAL free trade agreement with China would deliver the Australianeconomy a boost of $146 billion in real GDP terms, the Australian ChinaBusiness Council said today.
A report prepared for thecouncil by the Centre for International Economics found that tradeliberalisation between the two nations would deliver a consistentincrease in consumption of 0.7 per cent, topping at 1 per cent growthwithin two years of implementation of an FTA.
"TheAustralia China Business Council has long advocated increasedliberalisation between Beijing and Canberra, and this report confirmsour view that a comprehensive agreement would yield major results forthe Australian economy," ACBC national chairman Frank Tudor said in astatement.
The ACBC promotes two-way trade with China and has 700 member companies, including BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto and Qantas.
