The aftershocks of the North Korean nuclear bomb explosion are being felt across the world.
The reality of the secretive regime having a weapon of mass destruction is a terrifying prospect to the immediate region.
It is also a threat to the rest of the world that those weapons could soon be converted into missile warheads capable of flying thousands of miles.
These are the big issues we pay our leaders to deal with.
A strong signal must be sent to North Korea that the world will not allow the proliferation of nuclear weapons.
China must fulfil its special role in the current crisis. In the past it has been an ally to its Communist neighbour and blocked any United Nations action.
But China has now been accepted at the top table of world diplomacy because of its size, economic strength and significance.
It must show it belongs there.
