India’s GDP grows faster than expected

India’s economy grew a better-than-expected 5.8 per cent in the first three months of 2009 – the last quarter of the financial year, driven by strong growth in the finance and property sector, and a surge in social spending.

Growth from January to March 2009 – the last quarter of India’s April to March 2008-2009 financial year – picked up from the previous quarter, when growth had slowed to 5.3 per cent.
