A group of Oxford University students are being forced to carry out community service after getting drunk and wrecking a memorial garden.
The undergraduates, from Keble College, also urinated on the tribute to the 21-year-old Jonny Fraser, a St Peters College student who drowned while trying to save a friend in India in 2006.
Next, they kicked over a disabled tutor's bicycle, tore up flower beds and swore loudly at passersby.
Now the group, including several from the college rugby team, face disciplinary action.
"The students will have privileges withdrawn, be fined and ordered to carry out community service," said Simon Hunt, senior dean at Keble College.
One student, who witnessed the incident said: "It was disgusting.
"There were 13 or so students trampling over the flower beds and cackling like hyaenas while they urinated over the memorial.
"Jonny Fraser was a valued member of St Peters College and everyone was very sad when he died so suddenly.
"People are very angry that [they] have shown such an unbelievable level of disrespect, they are sick."
The trouble started after an unofficial crew date, a social function where sports teams from rival colleges meet, at St Peter's College on Friday June 5.
Members of Keble rugby team and other students had spent the evening drinking with St Peter's College girl's drinking society Vagina Dentata.
One student said: "The incident involving the bike caused the most upset in the college."
Sanjay Nanwani, 21, St Peter's College Junior Common Room (JCR) president, told student newspaper Cherwell: "A crew date of sorts went out of hand when a group of Keble students turned rowdy.
"They began to engage in what they themselves have acknowledged to be offensive, disruptive and unacceptable behaviour."
Zain Talyarkhan, Keble College JCR president, said the team were facing "serious disciplinary actions".
He said: "I've spoken personally to all the individuals who were involved in the incidents at St Peter's.
"They are all extremely sorry for their behaviour and have made personal apologies to those affected by their unacceptable actions.
"They are all facing serious disciplinary actions within the college and so I am satisfied with the result.
"The JCR condemns their actions and we hope nothing like this will occur in future."
The students responsible, who have not been named, have written a formal letter of apology to St Peter's College.
