CHINA has escalated its efforts to censor the internet with 10,000 volunteers to be deployed in Beijing to help weed out "unhealthy" material.

The Beijing authorities will recruit the volunteers over the next year to supplement technological systems in controlling online information.

Beijing's Deputy Mayor Cai Fuchao said a database of the city's 370,000 registered websites would be created and that registration of website owners, editors and administrators would be implemented.

The volunteers would monitor the websites and alert the authorities to content that breached guidelines.

The news follows increasing problems with blocking software, which the government had planned to install on every new computer sold in the country.
