Uighur protesters call on China to 'stop the bloodshed'

Members of the Australian Uighur community have staged a vocal protest in the streets of Canberra following violence in their Xinjiang homeland in China.
Protesters said yesterday the number of the dead in Xinjiang was more than six times the official death toll issued by the Chinese Government.
More than 200 Uighurs marched from Parliament House to the Chinese embassy and accused the Chinese Government of terrorism and human rights violations. Their march halted mid-morning traffic on Adelaide Avenue.
The crowd, which chanted ''Death to Chinese terrorists'' and ''Up with democracy, down with dictatorship'', called for independence for the north-western region.
Xinjiang's eight million Uighurs, a Turkic-speaking group, have for decades accused the Chinese Government of oppression. Across the road from the embassy protesters tore a Chinese flag apart, and one climbed to the top of a tree bearing the Turkish flag.
Young men dressed as Chinese police with baseball bats, and as bloodstained dissidents, spearheaded the march.
Azmat Rahim said Uighurs had been subjected to more than half a century of cultural repression.
''No opportunity for work, no education ... no schooling,'' he said.
