Russia, China kick off joint war games

Russia and China have launched massive jointmilitary drills aimed at fighting terrorism and ethnic separatism,Russian news agencies report.
The five-day exercises nearthe two nations' common border "must show the international communitythat Russia and China have the necessary resources to ensure stabilityand security in the region," Ria Novosti quoted the chief of Russia'sgeneral staff, General Nikolai Makarov, as saying on Wednesday.
"Thisis not a tribute to a fashionable trend, but a concrete contribution topreparing our armies to jointly counter security threats existing inour region," Makarov said, calling China "a reliable strategic partner".
Themilitary drills come on the heels of deadly unrest that began on July 5and which left at least 197 people dead in Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang,a vast desert region bordering several central Asian countries.
Upto 1,300 troops from each side will participate in the exercises dubbedPeace Mission 2009, which will be headquartered in China's northeasternprovince of Jilin, near the two nations' common border, Chinese mediareported earlier.
Up to 22 Russian planes and 40 Chinesemilitary aircraft, including fighter-bombers, armed helicopters, andtransport planes, will participate.
The two nations heldjoint exercises in 2005 and 2007 under the auspices of the ShanghaiCooperation Organisation, a regional security group consisting ofChina, Russia and four Central Asian states. |
