He is a kind and compassionate monk. Very obedient to the rules and prohibitions of Buddhism. Hates to kill anything, and this often leads him to conflict with Wu Kong, who kills everyone who wishes to harm his master, no matter if they are demons or humans. But perhaps this aversion to killing people may not be due to compassion, but fear of the laws. On one occasion when Wu Kong kills six bandits who wanted to rob and kill them, he scolds him like this: "... you have no compassion... as Buddhists we shouldn't kill even insects let alone people... luckily you killed them in this wilderness... if you killed people in towns, wouldn't I be jailed along with you?!" This hints of fear of trouble for himself, not of compassion. I'm not saying that he's not compassionate, I'm just saying that instead of the good, holy monk that some think he is, perhaps he's just a normal human, just like the rest of us.

And he may be just a little too compassionate for his own good. Various demons use this weakness to trick him, for example, the Red Child. The most often trick used is turning into some helpless person, such as a child, or an injured old man, so that San Zang will take pity on them and try to help them. This way, they are able to get close to him past Wu Kong's defences. This is because San Zang never listens to Wu Kong when he tells him the seemingly helpless people are actually demons in disguise. San Zang can be very stubborn at times... stupidly stubborn, unfortunately. He is also easily tricked or persuaded. He falls for the demons' traps every single time. Plus, he has this bad habit of always listening to Ba Jie instead of Wu Kong. Like the time when Wu Kong was away and they were protected by the magic circle, Ba Jie persuades San Zhang to leave it to find some more comfortable place. Result: They are captured by demons. And there was the time before when Wu Kong defeats the White Bone Demon. Due to the demon's trickery, San Zang thinks that Wu Kong has killed a young teenage girl (17), her old mother(80 - note the impossibility) and the old husband, which are all actually only the White Bone Demon in disguise. Being the compassionate monk that he is, he is naturally outraged and mortified as he thinks Wu Kong has killed three humans. He is on the verge of banishing Wu Kong when the old man's corpse turned into a pile of white bones. Then Wu Kong explains the truth. San Zhang has started to believe him when Ba Jie spitefully insinuates that the pile of bones is only a illusion of Wu Kong's making. San Zang, being the stupid monk he is, actually BELIEVES Ba Jie instead of Wu Kong, chants the Band-Tightening Spell again and banishes Wu Kong. Wu Kong leaves with tears in his eyes. If San Zang had more foresight, he would KNOW that Ba Jie and Wu Jing are practically useless when it come to protecting him from strong demons and refrain from banishing Wu Kong just because of Ba Jie's words. But nooooo, inexplicably, he thinks that greedy, lustful Ba Jie is more trustworthy than Wu Kong, who proves that he's almost always in the right throughout the story. You'd think after a few times he'd get the drift but this weakness persists stubbornly, resulting in a lot of pain and suffering which could have been avoided if only he listened to Wu Kong, which he seldom does. He is NOT WORTHY of Wu Kong's complete devotion! Okay, so maybe he's adequate when he's guiding Wu Kong onto the right path, the path towards salvation, moral values, things like that, but I think Wu Kong needs a master who actually trusts him and listens to him. A master who knows what's right and wrong and cooperates with Wu Kong's efforts to protect him. Evidently, San Zang is not that master, but I suppose that's necessary for the plot, which basically hinges upon San Zang getting tricked and captured every single time a demon turns up.

他也许是有点过于富有同情心了,各种妖怪充分利用他的弱点来欺骗他,例如红孩儿。最常用的欺骗手法是伪装成一个无助的人,比如一个小孩或者一个受伤的老人,三藏这时就会可怜并试图帮助他们。这样,他们就可以避开悟空的防范来接近他。悟空劝告说看似无助的人实际上都是妖怪的伪装,三藏从来不听。有时候三藏非常顽固,愚蠢的顽固,而且不幸的是,他还非常容易受欺骗、受蛊惑。他无一例外地落入了所有妖怪的骗局。更糟糕的是,他有一个坏习惯,喜欢听八戒的话而不听悟空的话。比如有一次,悟空离开了,他们被保护在一个魔法圈里。八戒劝说三藏离开,找一个更舒适的地方。结果是:他们被妖怪抓住了。还有一次,悟空打死了白骨精。然而由于妖怪的伪装,三藏认为悟空杀死的是一个17岁的年轻女孩和她的80岁老母亲(注意,这是不可能的)以及她的老父亲。作为一个富有同情心的僧人,他的天性让他既气愤又悲痛,因为他认为悟空杀死了三个人。当他马上要驱逐悟空的时候,老人的尸体变成了一堆白骨。于是悟空向他解释了实情,三藏也有点相信了。而八戒在一帮怀有恨意地含沙射影说,这堆白骨是悟空制造出来的幻想。三藏这个愚蠢的和尚马上相信了八戒的话,再次念起了紧箍咒,并把悟空赶走。悟空最终含着眼泪离开了。如果三藏稍微有些远见,就会知道八戒和悟净在对抗强大的妖怪时几乎是没用的,而不会仅仅听了八戒的话就把悟空赶走。但是不……实在无法理解,他认为贪婪、好色的八戒的话要比悟空那些整个小说中经过验证全部都是正确的话值得相信。你也许会想,经过几次教训他会了解的,但是这个弱点一直没有改变,这导致了无数的苦难和折磨。只要三藏听从悟空的劝告,这些都是可以避免的,而他很少这样做。他根本不值得悟空的全力扶持!好的,我承认他在指引悟空向救赎和道德价值等好的方面发展做的足够了,但是我认为悟空更需要的是一个真正相信他、愿意听从他的师父,一个懂得识别善恶和配合他保护自己的师父。很明显,三藏不是这样的人。但是我认为这是小说情节的需要,每次三藏受骗之后,妖怪才会顺理成章地出现。

Lastly, San Zang is very resilient to seduction. Very. He was tested numerous times by various women -including demons- and not once did he waver. He's like the exact opposite of Ba Jie. This I can be sure of. The most he ever did was blush, and this was because he felt very uncomfortable with all the steamy looks. Oh well. Either that or he's gay.

最后一点,三藏绝对不接受任何诱惑,绝对。各种女人,包括妖怪实验过他无数次,他从未动摇过。这方面他和八戒是截然相反的,我可以绝对肯定。他最过分的反应就是脸红,这是因为他对洗浴的场景感觉到不舒服,或者,他也可能是个同性恋。

从根本上讲,八戒象征着人类的世俗欲望和缺点。以下是八戒的三个基本性格特征:

1,好色。他看见美女时会恶心地流口水。一次,他去侦查8个蜘蛛精(她们看起来像是美女)。当她们在池子里洗澡的时候,他反常地第一次把自己变成一个和尚,问是否愿意和他一起洗澡。然后,他又变成一条鱼,在她们的腿底钻来钻去……你明白什么意思了吧。更早的一次,四个神仙变成了一个美妇人和三个年轻的女儿:真真、爱爱和怜怜,准备考验一下取经的队伍。母亲许诺,如果师徒四人愿意跟她和女儿们结婚,就给他们富裕舒适的生活。三藏根本不理睬她;悟空表现出嘲笑的态度;悟净简短地说他刚刚成为三藏的徒弟,不愿意离开取经的队伍;而八戒……满眼都是美女,结结巴巴地……长话短说,他没有通过考验,并且受到了惩罚。可是他并没有吸取教训,哦,也许仅仅很短的时间吸取了教训,但是老习惯总是很难改。

2,懒惰。他总是在抱怨肩上的重担和崎岖的道路,当然这也可以理解。但是工作中睡觉是不可原谅的,这样的错误他犯了好几次。一次,悟空派他去探路。他找到一个舒服的地方睡觉,回来的时候还准备了一整套的谎话告诉大家。他不知道,悟空从一开始就跟踪着他。不用说,他被三藏骂了一顿。在遇到比较大的困难的时候,他总是说要退出取经队伍。如果遇到麻烦,他会毫不犹豫地抛弃他的同伴。例如有一次,他和悟净在对抗一个真正强大的妖怪(悟空当时被三藏赶走了),眼看就要抵挡不住。他自己放弃了抵抗,找个地方藏起来,让悟净一个人战斗。不用说,悟净当时就被抓走了。这表现出他是多么不忠诚。

3,贪婪。八戒的胃口惊人,他能吃下普通人饭量20倍的食物,还仅仅感觉半饱。他在取经路上总是抱怨饥饿。

他还很滑稽,这给小说里增添了很多喜剧色彩。战斗的时候他也能管点用,曾经帮助悟空击败过一些妖怪。他还喜欢卖弄。有一次悟空被赶走了,他们来到一座宫殿,八戒昂首阔步地走来走去,卖弄一些小把戏,比如变成一个巨人,飞到半空中的云彩里。自然,给国王和其它人留下了深刻的印象。

总之,尽管八戒是个猪头猪脑的、贪婪的白痴,他毕竟在取经的路上出过很多力,虽然大部分是被迫的。而且,他是小说中最多彩的、最有趣的人物形象,仅次于悟空。

Fundamentally, Ba Jie symbolizes man's mundane desires and shortcomings. These three are Ba Jie's basic characteristics:

1. Lustful. He drools disgustingly when he sees beautiful women. Once, he went to spy on eight spider demons (who incidentally looked like beautiful women) when they were bathing in a pool. The pervert changed himself into a monk first and asked if he could bathe with them, and after that he turned into a fish and slinked between their legs......... You get the idea. On a much earlier instance, four gods changed themselves into a beautiful lady and her three young daughters, Zhen Zhen, Ai Ai, and Lian Lian, and gave the pilgrims a test. The fake mother promised them riches and a comfortable life if they would marry her and her daughters. San Zhang ignored her, Wu Kong was kind of derisive, Wu Jing made a little speech on how he had just become San Zhang's disciple and he would never back out of the pilgrimage, and Ba Jie....... was getting an eyeful of the beautiful lady and stuttering...... To cut a long story short, he failed the test and suffered for it, but he didn't learn his lesson. Well, for a while maybe, but old habits are hard to break.

2. Lazy. He complains about his burden and the rough roads - though that may be understandable. But sleeping on the job is not - which he does multiple times. Once, when Wu Kong sends him to scout the area, he goes to sleep in a comfortable spot and prepares a whole load of lies to tell his fellow pilgrims when he goes back. Unknowingly, Wu Kong has been following him from the start. Needless to say, he got chewed out by San Zhang. He is always talking about quitting the pilgrimage whenever they encounter particularly tough obstacles. He would desert his fellow pilgrims without a second thought if they get into trouble. For instance, when he and Wu Jing are fighting a really strong demon (Wu Kong has recently been banished) and they are losing, he gives up and runs away to hide, leaving Wu Jing to fend for himself. Needless to say, Wu Jing is immediately captured by the demon. This goes to show how disloyal he can be.

3. Greedy. Ba Jie has a voracious appetite. He can eat up to 20 times the amount of food for a normal human, and still feel just half full. He is always complaining about being hungry during the journey.

He is also quite humourous, and he provides a lot of the comic relief in the story. He is adequate when it comes to fighting, and helps Wu Kong to defeat some of the demons. He is also a big show-off. There was once when Wu Kong is banished, and they come to a palace, and Ba Jie starts strutting around, doing some showy tricks like turning himself into an enormous giant and flying off on clouds. Naturally, he impresses the king and all the others.

In conclusion, although Ba Jie is a pig-headed, greedy, perverted idiot (as opposed to idiotic pervert XD), he does help out a lot on the journey, albeit reluctantly. He is also one of the most colourful, interesting characters in the story, second only to Wu Kong.

Basically, he's an evil demon with a bad ass attitude who goes around killing off humans for no reason at all. (^_^;) Just kidding!

总体上讲,他是个脾气暴戾的恶魔,到处无缘由地杀人。(^_^;)我在开玩笑。

He's a very good impromptu poet... But then, virtually all the characters in Xiyouji, from goddess to immortal, from demon to human, from Taoists to Buddhists, everyone bursts into poems at whim. How would I love to do that ... (sighs dreamily) But then, it may be because Wu Cheng En is obsessed with poems. He likes to indulge himself and characters with poetry. In one instance, there was a woodcutter and a fisherman competing with impromptu poems about how beautiful the woods or the rivers were. It lasted three pages long and the only point was that one of them gave a passing water guardian (ye cha) one single bit of information. (sigh) Then there was this whole chapter dedicated to San Zhang and demons making up poems on the spot... But I digress. 

他其实是一个非常有才华的即席诗人。但是实际上,西游记中几乎所有的人物,从神仙到妖怪,从魔鬼到人类,从老道到僧人,都会根据脑子里一闪而过的念头作诗。我多么希望也有这样的才华啊……(无奈地叹口气)。也许是因为吴承恩就对诗很着迷,所以他喜欢让自己和作品中的人物都变成诗人。在一个场景中,一个樵夫和一个渔夫比赛即席创作歌颂森林和河流的诗歌。他们的作品占据了三页纸,而目的仅仅是其中一个人向路过的水域守卫(夜叉)提供了一点信息。
Anyway, Wu Kong likes to make poems especially when he sees beautiful scenery. And I tell you he absolutely loves scenic views. Once he and Ba Jie were sneaking into a royal garden and he started squealing and jumping around when he saw the oh-so-pretty trees and flowers. And yes, he made up a poem about it on the spot. (shakes head) Talk about obsessed. (-_-)   

不管怎样,悟空喜欢作诗,尤其是当他看见美丽的景色的时候。我还可以告诉你他绝对喜欢美丽的景色。有一次,他和八戒偷偷潜入一个皇家花园。当他看见那么漂亮的树木和花草的时候,他禁不住又跳又叫,而且,没错,他还当场作了一首诗(摇头)表达他的喜爱之情。(-_-)

His favorite food is peaches. His favorite colour is pink... just kidding! His favorite person - Tang San Zang? Perhaps. He loves to tease and play tricks on Ba Jie, who hates him because of it.  

他最喜欢的食物是桃子,他最喜欢的颜色是粉色……呵呵,开玩笑了。他最喜欢的人,是唐三藏吗?也许吧。他喜欢取笑和奚落八戒,而八戒因此而恨他。

Wu Kong’s most prominent personality trait is bravery and fearlessness. There are conflicting views on that, though. Some say he is defiant and bold just because he is powerful, and he knows that no one can defeat him. Power abuse, anyone? Well, there is a little truth in this. Proof? Once when he lost his magic rod, he became much more polite to the Jade Emperor when asking for assistance. He even made a small bow, which is extremely respectful by Wu Kong’s standards! But then it's not entirely true either. When he was still practically a child, he jumped through a huge, thundering waterfall without a second thought - and he was powerless to defend himself at the time. Does this not show pure courage? And he went across oceans and continents alone to find an immortal who could teach him. That takes a lot of courage, as well as determination and willpower. But after five hundred years and he was on the pilgrimage, there was one occasion when he complained to the Goddess of Mercy that it was too dangerous, there were demons by the millions and what if he died before attaining zheng guo (Buddha status)? He couldn't do it. The Goddess had to give him three life-saving hairs that would change into objects which could help him out of a life and death situation. Only then was he satisfied. Does that mean that after the years he had become cowardly? Perhaps not. As a matter of fact, he really did nearly die during the course of the journey, so his fears were not completely unfounded. Wu Kong is afraid of nothing except death, as can be proved by his search for immortality. Thus, we can justify and forgive this ‘act of cowardice’, which was possibly just an ‘act of prudence’.     

悟空最为显著和性格是勇敢和无畏,然而在这个问题上存在着相互矛盾的观点。有些人说他的目中无人是因为他的力量,他知道没有人可以击败他。这也算是滥用权力吧,我们身边这类人可不少。还是有一些事实来佐证这个观点的。有一次他弄丢了自己的魔法棒,在向玉皇大帝寻求帮助的时候,他变得礼貌了很多。甚至还微微鞠了个躬,按照悟空的礼法标准来看,这算是极为尊敬了。但是也有一些事实证明这个观点不完全正确。当他还是一个小孩的时候,他毫不犹豫地跳进了一个巨大的、轰轰作响的瀑布,那时候他可是没有任何保护自己的力量。这难道不是源自他的勇气吗?他独自漂洋过海寻找可以教他长生不老之道的人,这也需要勇气、决断力和毅力。但是五百年后,当他在朝圣的道路上时,有一次他向观音菩萨抱怨这个旅行太危险了,路上有成千上万的妖怪等着他们,万一死在求取正果的半路怎么办?他不想干了。菩萨只好给了他三根救命的头发,这些头发可以变成任何东西来帮助他逃离困境,这时他才满意了。这是否表示经过了五百年之后,他变得懦弱了?也许不是。实际上,在旅途中他的确差点死掉,所以他的恐惧不是空穴来风。悟空唯一害怕的就是死亡,他不顾一切求仙的行动可以作证。所以我们认为他的“懦弱行为”是有理由的,是可以原谅的,可以理解为是“行动谨慎”。

Another interesting aspect of his personality is the development of his relationship with Tang San Zang. At first, he was extremely grateful to San Zang because he saved him from the Mountain of Five Elements and became his disciple obligingly. But when Wu Kong killed six bandits who meant to kill them and take their belongings, San Zang became very angry and scolded him. Wu Kong gets infuriated when people scold him so he took off, leaving San Zang alone in the wilderness. The Goddess of Mercy gave San Zang a golden band and taught him the Band-Tightening Spell, which would make the golden band shrink. When Wu Kong came back finally, he put on the band, not knowing what it was. San Zang chanted the Band-Tightening Spell, which made the band tighten on his head, causing him terrible pain. San Zang asked him if he would be obedient from then on and Wu Kong replied yes. But actually he was still enraged and tried to kill San Zang with his magic rod, only stopping when San Zang chanted the spell again. Thus, it can be said that Wu Kong was tortured into obedience to San Zang. Um... (sweat) 'Tortured' seems too strong a word, maybe 'forced' would be better. 

有关他的性格另外有趣的一面是他和唐三藏之间关系的发展。最开始的时候,他对三藏极为感激,因为三藏把他从五指山下解救出来,并且心甘情愿地拜三藏为师。但是,当悟空杀死了6个要抢劫他们的财物并威胁杀死他们的强盗后,三藏非常生气,责骂了他一通。悟空在被人责骂的时候会变得非常愤怒,于是他干脆离开,把三藏一个人留在野地里。观音菩萨给了三藏一个黄金的箍,还教给他一套咒语,可以让这个金箍缩小。悟空回来之后,不知情地把金箍套在头上,三藏马上念动咒语,金箍逐渐缩小让悟空痛苦万分。三藏于是问他今后是否会服从,他说是的。可是实际上他依然怒气未消,试图用他的魔法棒杀死三藏,而三藏再次念动咒语阻止了他的行为。因此来看,悟空可以说是被拷打而服从三藏的。嗯……(汗)“拷打”这个词可能有点严重,说“强迫”比较合理。

But, strangely, it all changed during the pilgrimage. Wu Kong seemed to grow an affection for the monk. San Zang doesn’t deserve this. He is stubborn and cowardly. He never listens to Wu Kong when he warns that there are demons nearby and never takes his advice either. And he is weak and indecisive, always wavering under persuasion. Maybe Wu Kong only wanted to protect San Zang because by doing his he could become a Buddha. But still, he cried a lot of times over his master. The first time was when San Zang made him leave, thinking that he had killed three innocent humans when in fact they were the same demon in disguise. San Zang, being the ignorant human he was, didn't know the difference. Wu Kong paid his last respects to his master and left. It was only when he reached the Eastern Sea that he let himself cry. Then there was the time when San Zang was abducted by yet another demon, who nearly killed Wu Kong with his fire attack. The first word Wu Kong uttered upon waking up was 'Master!'. Then he wept and composed a poem on the spot describing his grief about his master and his helplessness. He does that quite a few times during the course of their journey - the poem composing as well as the crying. 

但是奇怪的是,这种情况在取经的道路上发生了转变。悟空似乎对这个和尚产生了感情,而三藏根本不值得悟空这样对待,他又顽固又懦弱,从来不听从悟空说附近有妖怪的事,也从不采纳他的建议。他没有什么能力,也不会下决定,总是随着别人的劝说摇摆不定。也许悟空保护三藏唯一的目的就是未了能够成佛。但是,他却为自己的师父哭了好几次。第一次,是在他杀死了三个无辜的人之后,三藏要赶他走。这三个人其实是同一个妖怪伪装的,三藏是一个普通人,看不出这其中的奥妙。悟空向三藏行了最后一个礼,离开他跑到东海里去,在那里他哭了。另一次,三藏被一个妖怪绑架,这个妖怪几乎用火焰把悟空杀死。悟空苏醒过来后喊出的第一句话是“师父!”,然后他哭着在现场做了一首诗,描述了他的悲痛和无助。作诗和哭,在悟空的西行道路上发生了多次。

Then again, he can be rather childish at times, crying over silly things. Once, he disguised himself as a small demon and was just outside the cave of the demon he wanted to trick when he realized that he would have to kou tou to the demon to perfect his disguise. A kou tou is when you get down on your knees and bow your head to the floor. It is the most honoring gesture in Chinese customs. Now, Wu Kong never kou tous to anybody. The only people he ever kou toued to were his first master who taught him magic and immortality, his current master, San Zang, and the Goddess of Mercy. He doesn't even kou tou to the Jade Emperor. It was quite humiliating for him to kou tou to a mere demon. So what do you think he did? Yup, he cried. Ah, what a sense of honour!  

有时候,悟空还会表现出一点孩子气,为一些不值得的事情掉眼泪。一次,他把自己伪装成一个小妖怪,计划欺骗一个大妖怪。在这个妖怪住的洞穴外边,他发现要让自己的伪装不被识破,就必须要向这个大妖怪叩头。所谓叩头就是跪在地上,用头接触地面,在中国的文化中,这是极为尊敬的表示。悟空只向三个人叩头过:传授给他法术和长生不死的方法的第一任师父、现在的师父三藏和观音菩萨,他甚至没有向玉皇大帝叩头。给一个小小的妖怪叩头简直是一种侮辱。你猜他怎么办?没错,他哭了。呵呵,多么重视他的荣誉啊。

But perhaps I'm leading you to believe that he's a crybaby. This is definitely untrue. Wu Kong just reacts more emotionally and dramatically to some things. Actually, he has a ferocious temper. Especially when his enemies insult him, or when his master and brothers get abducted. Incidentally, when he first met Pu Ti Zu Shi, he said that if people hit or scolded him, he didn't react at all. Was it just talk, or had his personality changed yet again because he had become more powerful? Did his powers inflate his ego? Did he become more sensitive to insults and scoldings because they injure his ego? Did he acquire a sense of dignity, honour, pride, or perhaps arrogance, so that he couldn't bear any slights to his person? Whatever it is, Wu Kong is quick to fly into a temper, which gets him into trouble countless of times.

Despite that, Wu Kong has many positive aspects to his personality. For one, Wu Kong is a confident, optimistic person. He doesn't just go down when he faces hardships, he devises ways to overcome them, putting a smile on his face even when he has been defeated numerous times. Wu Kong is also a very intelligent immortal. He puts emphasis on knowing his enemies and using different strategies to defeat them. And Wu Kong is a master at that - finding out his opponent's weakness and using it. Anyway, he can ask for reinforcements virtually everywhere. His outgoing, friendly personality and his notorious reputation makes sure of that! ^_^ Wu Kong shows no mercy when it comes to evil - he eliminates all the demons the pilgrims meet on their journey. He has a strong sense of justice and during the journey, he helps out humans who face problems caused by demons, reuniting families and saving entire countries. But best of all, he has a wicked sense of humour. Poking fun at Ba Jie is just part of it. ^_^ You'll see.

呵呵,有意思。《西游记》读原著比看电视剧要生动得多,有些地方语言充满了诙谐和幽默。

那是因为西方的和尚们同性恋的丑闻太多了……

我倒觉得从某种意义上说电视剧拍的比原著好。因为电视剧比原著把唐僧升华了,加上了历史中真实唐僧的一面,比如受封之后回国继续努力工作传道,而不是原著呆在西天享福。也删改掉了不大合现代人观念的一些地方,比如续集中凤仙郡(猪八戒吃面山)那集改动就很大。原著关于唐僧和女人的描写也是一样,原著老是写唐僧觉得不能让邪恶的女人偷到自己的“真元”所以才……总之原文唐僧的慈悲、虔诚至少有一半来自于自私和野心。
