Akmal Shaikh was born in Pakistan and came to Britain with his parents as a small child. He was educated at primary and secondary schools here before marrying a Hindu wife, who converted to his Muslim faith, and having three children, a girl - Leilla - and two sons.

He set up a company running mini cabs called Transportation and, later, another called Teksi in Kentish Town. For some years his businesses flourished. But, according to records seen by the Mail, he was bankrupt for more than two years during the Nineties.

Yet money problems were not the only troubling factors in Akmal's life. As he struggled with bankruptcy, his once happy marriage began to break down.
Even today his former wife and Leilla's mother will not talk about those times and refuses to have her name used in the campaign to stop his death sentence.

Her attitude is not, perhaps, surprising. For after Akmal's marriage began to fall apart, he was hauled before an employment tribunal by a 24-year-old female employee at Teksi, who successfully claimed that he had sexually hounded her.

In a series of deeply inappropriate remarks, he often asked about her sexual relationship with her own boyfriend. He commented on her clothes, and asked if she was wearing them to please him.

Instead, he disappeared, telling his incredulous family he was planning to start an airline in Poland. Then he married Polish-born Agnieszka Parcheta, a woman in her early 30s, who had worked for him as a secretary in London.

Akmal, according to the employee, would go to Poland for weeks at a time to be with Agnieszka, who lived in the city of Lublin.

As there was a vacancy for a secretary, Akmal employed a succession of pretty young ladies, mostly Poles, who were glad of the chance of work. It is rumoured that he had affairs with a handful of them on his return trips to London.

Of course, how much of these recollections Akmal himself would agree with is not certain. Leilla says she last saw her father in 2004 at her engagement party. He did not attend her wedding two years later because he was in Poland with Agnieszka.
