BEIJING: China has convicted 20 journalists and blacklisted 100 of them in 2009. They have been accused of writing false stories and taking bribes to hush up news stories, Li Dongdong, deputy head of the General Administration of Press and Publication has revealed. The process of investigation and punishment of “media workers” involved in bribery and writing false stories will be stepped up this year, Li warned.

The action comes in the wake of phenomenal growth of the media industry in China. The industry has seen rising competition in the area of news gathering after decades of living off official handouts and official briefings.

Most observers say the sense of competition is driven by business interests of newspaper managements rather than a strong desire for press freedom.

The year 2010 has already seen an additional nine journalists being sent to jail for terms raging between one and half years and 16 years for taking hush money from the owner of a coal mine in Weixian County of northern China's Hebei province, which was the scene of a major accident that killed 35 people in July 2008. The journalists representing eight media organizations were given prison sentences last month for suppressing the news after receiving bribes from the mine owner.

The blacklisting of journalists in 2009 covered over 10 newspapers, which were given warnings by GAPP. They included high circulation Beijing Times and the Guangzhou-based 21st Century Business Herald.

The GAPP has also decided to name and shame journalists found to be violating laws in future, he said.
Li told a meeting of newspaper and magazine executives on Wednesday that his organization will strengthen supervision and management of media organizations, who have repeatedly violated rules.

The GAPP initiated investigations against a total of 556 journalists in 2009 after receiving tip-off about wrongdoing from the public, he said. Those investigated including 76 journalists accused of taking bribes.
