Police officials in Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang Province, said Monday that a woman who was detained last week when she walked into a youth center brandishing a rusty knife had been diagnosed with schizophrenia four years ago. The police said the woman’s family had told officers her name was Xing. She was seen last Thursday using the knife to carve into a tree outside a youth center. Xing, 35, then wandered into the center, where guards and police officers stopped her. She did not harm anyone. The episode took place a day after a man with a kitchen cleaver hacked to death seven kindergartners and two adults at a school in Shaanxi Province. China is reeling from a series of attacks on schoolchildren that have resulted in the deaths of 17 people. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/18/world/asia/18briefs-CHINA.html |
