BEIJING: An iPhone component maker in China has seen seven of its employees committing suicide in a row for unexplained reasons. It has now roped in Buddhist monks and psychological counselors to check the spate of suicides. The firm has also conducted special religious rites similar to 'yagna' to dispel black spirits.
The last of the seven suicides took place on Friday when a 21-year old worker of the company, Foxconn Technology Group, crashed to death after falling from the 7-storied dormitory building of the unit in Shenzhen of South China's Guangdong province. This was the ninth suicide attempt this year, two of which did not prove successful.
What caused some surprise was that though the worker, who went by the surname of Liang, had four knife cuts and carried a blood-stained knife on his body. The local police believe that he had hurt himself before jumping off the building.
The Taiwan based Foxconn Group said on Monday that it has hired 100 counselors and set up hotlines to provide emotional support to the workers. |
