BEIJING: The Chinese foreign ministry said on Tuesday that it sees the upcoming visit of President Pratibha Patil to Beijing as an opportunity to “upgrade China India relations to higher level”. It would be a good time to “deepen bilateral understanding and cooperation” between the two countries, ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu told reporters.
Patil will meet Chinese president Hu Jintao and premier Wen Jiabao on Thursday. She will also meet Wu Bangguo, chairman of the National People's Congress and Jia Qinglin, chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference during the tour.
She arrives Beijing on Wednesday evening and leaves for the inauguration of an Indian style Buddhist temple at Luoyang in Henan province on Saturday morning. The President will later spend three days in Shanghai.
The spokeswoman said that the relationship between China and India has “entered into a period of stability and steady progress”. The two countries have committed themselves to maintaining peace and stability on the border pending a final agreement on the dispute over the boundary.
In Shanghai, the President is scheduled to address a business conference attended by industrialists from both countries and unveil a statue of poet Rabindranath Tagore. |
