That's right, the former Big Ten Player of the Year is the second NBA player to sign with the fastest growing shoe company in China.

The formal announcement was made yesterday by people within Turner's camp. The Sixers rookie will wear shoes already in Li-Ning's roster this season, with a player-specific shoe and clothing line to come next season.

"Adding a supreme young talent like Evan Turner sends a message to the global basketball community that Li-Ning basketball is committed to being a player on the global stage," said Li-Ning basketball director Brian Cupps.

The Chinese apparel company has been available in the U.S. for the past five years, mostly in the fashion sneaker industry. Li-Ning has built its reputation as the leading provider for international table tennis and badminton apparel since they were founded in 1990.

This is not the first time an NBA player has gone with a relatively unknown shoe company. Many basketball purists will remember when Grant Hill entered the league and helped launch FILA into the mainstream basketball shoe market. Those same people will also remember how FILA has been blamed for the nagging ankle injuries that Hill has faced throughout his career.

Why wouldn't you buy Li-Nings? All your Nikes, Adidas and Reeboks are MADE IN CHINA anyway! If you think your Nikes will be better you need to get a clue. All those sneakers are made in the same factories. Li-Nings will actually be BETTER quality since they are BASED in China and those factories are going to give them special treatment. And they will be CHEAPER too for the same or even better quality. Li-Ning isn't paying $100 million to LeBron so they don't have to jack up the price. A $30 pair of Li-Nings will cost more to make than a $150 pair of Nikes easy.

The average pair of Li-Ning's cost $99 in US retail. the real issue is not that they are made in China because like you said they all are made there. The issues is with the product development. Nike does extensive research in the U.S. to make shoes that will physically support an athlete. The fear is, just as we saw with FILA, that they dont have the support system to make a product built for professional preformance.

Reading the sneaker blogs I know that Li-Ning opened a design center in Portland in 2008. Where did the designers come from? Obviously Nike & adidas. Sounds like the support systems are in place. Now they've signed Turner to help with the marketing. I wish them success. More options is a good thing.
