BEIJING - UP TO 2,000 people demonstrated against Japan in the Chinese megacity of Chongqing on Tuesday, a Japanese consulate official said, the latest in a series of protests amid tensions between the neighbours.
'There are between 1,000 and 2,000 there now, including on-lookers, and several hundred are real protesters,' an official at the Japanese consulate in the southwestern city told AFP.
'We're working as normal but we have strengthened security. There's police here too, and most of them are plainclothes police,' said the official, noting that the demonstration had begun near the consulate.
The series of anti-Japan protests were sparked by a simmering territorial row.
The dispute erupted in early September when Tokyo arrested a Chinese trawler captain near a disputed island chain in the East China Sea claimed by both sides.
Tokyo subsequently released the captain, but the incident angered China and sparked a rush of nationalism in a population that is still deeply resentful of Japan for its brutal World War II invasion and occupation of parts of China. -- AFP |
