BEIJING: China has now set out to enter the high-speed rail market in the United States in collaboration with General Electric. China, which has the world's longest high-speed rail network covering 7,500 kilometres, has also initiated plans to connect the country with South East Asian neighbors including Singapore, Thailand, Myanmar and Laos.

Roping in GE is a significant move because China's HSR network has so far relied on technology transfer from other train makers including Seimens. Alstom, Bombardier and Kawasaki Heavy Industries. The latest move involves establishing a joint venture in the US between GE and China's CSR Corporation Limited with an initial investment of $50 million.

GE said in a statement that the venture would advance high-speed and other rail technology in the United States besides creating 250 jobs by 2012. The new company will be the first US manufacturer ready to supply HSR passenger trains for projects in Florida and California, it said.

Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang told the World Congress on High Speed Rail in Beijing Tuesday that his country was keen to expand mutually beneficial cooperation with other countries to promote safe, convenient, efficient and green railways.

"We are committed to advancing the global high-speed rail technology market and this agreement provides a significant opportunity for infrastructure and business growth," a GE official was quoted in the Chinese media as saying. Besides HSR, the new company will also produce medium-speed passenger trains and transit rail vehicles for urban areas in the United States.

China established a world record recently when ts CRH-380A train touched 486 kms an hour on a test run on the Beijing-Shanghai track. The government plans to enlarge its network to high speed rail from 7,500 kms to 16,000 kms by 2020 while expanding the total rail network to 120,000 kms by that time.
