Murky future for Google maps in China as company, gov't begin talks
A spokesperson for the State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping (SBSM) recently revealed that Google has not submitted an application for the Internet mapping services license. In response to the issue, Google China announced on April 1 that it is now communicating with the Chinese government to discuss how to provide Internet mapping service products in China.
Kou Jingwei, director of the bureau's press office, recently said that the deadline for submitting an application for Internet mapping service licenses was March 31. SBSM will adopt "administrative measures;" including prohibiting the operation of Internet mapping services for enterprises that have not applied for the license on July 1. Therefore, the prospects of Internet mapping services in China attracted wide attention. However, the bureau did not receive Google’s application for Internet mapping services.
Google China announced on April 1 that it is communicating with the Chinese government to discuss how to provide Internet mapping service products in China. However, Google declined to answer the question of whether it had submitted the application on March 31. It also declined to comment regarding the future of Google Maps in China.
