While Western businessmen are heading East to make their fortunes, 60 per cent of those with fortunes of more than $10 million (£6 million), had either considered "investment immigration" or already completed the process.

Investment immigration allows rich individuals to effectively buy their residence in another country, in the hope that their money will trickle into the local economy. In the UK, anyone depositing £1 million in a bank account is permitted to stay.

A decade ago, the idea of having such sums to spare would have been beyond the imagination of most Chinese, but this year the number of Chinese boasting disposable assets of more than £1 million is expected to reach 585,000, nearly doubled the total in 2008.

The report by the management consultancy firm Bain, which surveyed 2,600 Chinese, found that countries including Canada and Australia had raised the bar for immigration.

"In 2010, Canada raised the net assets required from C$800,000 (£511,000) to C$1.6 million. Australia also raised it from A$250,000 (£163,000) to A$500,000", it said.
Securing a good education for their children was listed as the main driver behind the wave of departures from China, and the number of Chinese children studying overseas "has grown by 20 per cent each year for a long time", the Bain report said, adding that there are currently 230,000 Chinese in foreign schools.

"In addition, rich Chinese want to secure their wealth and spend their old age enjoying a high quality of life."
Some of China's most famous stars, such as the actresses Gong Li and Zhang Ziyi, the film director Chen Kaige, the maker of Farewell My Concubine, and Lang Lang, the pianist, have all left the mainland.
However, the actor Jackie Chan, who is increasingly reliant on the Chinese market for a lucrative advertising career, said his son, Fang Zuming, had given up his US citizenship to take up Chinese nationality.
