China's census shows dramatic fall in growth rate; changes in one-child policy likely

BEIJING: China's population grew at a reduced pace of 0.57 % a year over the past decade resulting in a much larger population of grey heads. This is nearly half of the growth rate of 1.07 % recorded in the earlier decade 1990-2000 and much less compared to India.

The new census numbers is bound to put more pressure on the government to relax the one-child policy to check the sharp decline in the creation of the new generation with children below the age of nine.

The period 2000-2010 saw the population of people under the age of 14 rise two % to 16.6% as compared to the previous decade. The aging population of people above 60 years has risen from 10% in 1990-2000 to 13.26% in the past decade.

China's population rose 73.9 million to reach 1.37 billion in 2010 end, according to the results of the sixth census released by the National Statistics Bureau
China now accounts for 19% of world population and is followed in the numbers chart by India with a little over 1.2 billion people.

The preference for males was evident with total males accounting for 51.27% of the population as compared to 48.73% females.

"(But) we also need to pay close attention to the new changes of our population structure, adhering to the family planning policy while cautiously and gradually improving the policy to promote more balanced population growth in the country," Ma Jiantang, director of the ]National Bureau of Statistics, said.

Ma said China faced three challenges: the upward trend in aging population, an expanding floating population and the high boy-to-girl sex ratio among newborns. But the reduction in overall population has has eased the pressure on resources and laid a "relatively good foundation" for rapid economic development.

Half of the Chinese people live in cities with an increasing stream of migration and higher levels of urbanization taking place since 2000, the census showed. The last decade has seen a dramatic rise of 13.46% in urban residents as compared to the 2000 figure owing to large scale migration.

The size of a household in China has shrunk to 3.1 as compared to 3.4 in the 1990-2000 decade owing to a falling birth rate.

The census, which involved six million workers, showed that the illiteracy ratio on the mainland declined to 4.08% in 2010 from 6.72% in 2000. Five provinces - Guangdong, Shandong, Henan, Sichuan and Jiangsu-have emerged as most populous.
